Help! Slow weightloss sucks!

Hey MFP Friends,
My weightloss has been really slow. (As in, less than a pound a week.) I'm staying below or right around my calories and working out at least a little big daily. Any thoughts as to what could be happening? My goal is to lose around 2lbs a week.

What's your calorie intake set at? If it's high, change the settings to 1200 calories a day. It's a slow process though, you'll get there eventually! Look at what you're eating as well, and try and be as accurate as possible with serving sizes, portions etc. Don't forget about adding little snacks and coffees. It all adds up! Good luck with it all though!

by your photo you already look fairly thin, so maybe it's just slow because you don't have much to lose... what a gift :)

I get through it by remembering it's a lifestyle change, not just a diet. This is the way I'm supposed to eat the rest of my life. And if I get used to it today, I won't end up where I started from 40 lbs. ago. And, the slower it comes off, the longer it will stay off. Sorry I don't have any words of wisdom that helps your question. When I started, I was losing 2 lbs. a week. Now I'm lucky to get a 1/2 pound a week. But, I know that every pound I lose, won't ever come back!!! Hang in there, you will get there. Congrats on already losing a bunch of weight. That in and of itself is something to smile about.

Do you weigh your food? It really helps ensure your calorie count is accurate.
Also, most ways of calculating calories burned for an exercise also count your daily burn-or what you would have burned just sitting around. I divided my daily burn by 1440 (minutes in a day) and subtract that from my calories before I log them. In my case it's about 1.1 cal/min so I'd subtract 50 calories if I worked out for 45 minutes. It's not a lot, and in most cases MFP's deficit will make up for it, but if whatever you are using to gauge your calories burned is high, it'll help narrow the margin of error.

Hi, I have to agree as I have 6 lbs to lose and mite as well be 60 as it just won't come off, very frustrating.
  • Good eye! I measure most things but I do not weight. I bet I am missing some calories (especially in the meat that I eat!)

Thanks to you all for the encouragement and ideas.
  • You could try cutting another two hundred calories a day, and engaging in some fairly intense calisthenics (p90x/crossfit/insanity) or take up running as a hobby. Since you're burning less than 500 calories per day at the moment, cutting 200 and burning 300 more from exercise per day would probably get to the two-pound-per week level, or slightly under.

If you consistently aren't losing as fast as MFP says you should be, MFP probably has your basal metabolism set as too high, or you are overestimating the amount you burn via exercise, or you are in starvation mode if you're taking in far less than you should be.

Edit: as others have pointed out, a scale is necessary. Quality data is king, right?
