Corn tortilla chips

Are they really bad for you? Not like I eat them all the time, but sometimes I just want corn chips with my taco salad/dip. Or a taco shell.. what about those whole grain taco shells?

  • I say the whole grain taco shells is better but do eat them in moderation.
  • I always make my own taco shells by spritzing a corn tortilla with just a little canola oil and a very light dusting of chili powder. I drape them over the wires of the oven rack and bake at 350* until they are crispy. I learned about this with a healthy taco recipe at Eating Well. Much healthier than store bought taco shells. I have also done this for chips by cutting the tortillas and laying them on a baking sheet while in the oven.

I still have organic corn tortilla chips from time to time. Chips and homemade salsa is a big favorite of mine... :frown:

Most foods are okay once in a while in small amounts, corn chips included.

Look for those that don't have a lot of added junk. Corn, oil, and salt is the best way to go. Also check if they have trans-fatty acids (it's actually better to have saturated fat than trans-fats). And check the serving size. Generally a serving is only about 11 chips, and most people will have way more than that. Serve yourself the 1 serving (or two if you choose) and put the rest away before you eat so you're not tempted to go back for more. Then just account for it in your calories.
