I retired from a basically desk job I'd had for 10 years. Very stressful, poor eating habits (lots of fast food) and only on-again off-again exercise of any kind. Weight has fluctuated from 164 to about 205 over last 20 years. I'm only 5 foot 5 1/2. At the beginning of this year, after being retired for a few months, I weighed in at 200. I joined a community gym in January 2011. Immediately started weight training and cardio (some bike work, walking and/or swimming). I started watching my diet, eating healthy (I was diagnosed with diabetes in 1998). I was doing cardio of 60 minutes 5 days a week. I lost 30 pounds by April. I dipped a couple more pounds, then stuck at around 172. I had finally quit smoking last fall, but my drinking beer and shots had increased to 3-4 days a week. I gained to 176. Started this site, again watching my diet better, backed off on the beer and shots, kept with 60 minutes a day, 6 days a week of cardio. Strength training 3 days a week, after working with a personal trainer. I've lost 3.5 pounds already. Would appreciate any tips I can get. I want to get to at least 160 pounds (which is still 10 over suggested BMI). I'd like to get close to that as possible by Oct. 5th. Then stay at 160 indefinitely. I'm starting a new job (D.J. and karaoke jock) and I need to look as fit and young as possible. I LOVE rockin out to music from the 70's through new rock and alternative rock. Work like to make encouraging friends here. Thanks.

Welcome to the MFP world. You sound motivated, but like you need support. I am a soon to be 55 year old who has lost 18 pounds since the beginning of June. I would love to become your friend. I think you have to remember that you have be overweight by your account for 20 years. Don't rush the weight loss - that only contributes to its return. Set realistic goals. I am impressed with your exercise regime: cardio for an hour a day would do me in. Good for you giving up the smoking and some of the alcohol.

A phrase to leave you with: If weight gain is "The Highway to Hell", then you are now embarking on "The Bridge Over Troubled Waters" on the way to becoming "You Sexy Thing".
  • I have been a teacher for 20 years and am getting ready to retire. I have focused for so many years on others, that I forgot about me. This past December my only child died. This really changed my perspective on life. At 55, it is time for ME!! Good luck with your goal...and your new job!!!!
