There is a hand to mouth habit that comes with smoking and when we quit, there is a tendency to eat more to satisfy that habit. I used sunflower seeds and chewed gum but eventually, I just forgot about it. Also when you quit smoking there tends to be a decrease in general activity as when smoking, you are required to get up and walk yourself to a smoking area numerous times per day. When I quit, my steps at work went from around 8K to around 4K just from not getting up and walking out to the smoking area so I had to make myself get up on my own and cruise the floor of the office for no other reason than to just move a bit more.3 -
Congratulations! Quitting is so tough, but in another few months, you'll wonder why you didn't do it earlier. Nicotine withdrawal has many unpleasant side effects, and one of those includes a slower metabolism. It won't last forever, but for now, get up and move more. That was my key to keeping the weight under control and to fight the cravings when they hit. When you just have to put something in your mouth, try a straw. I used to cut them in half and pull on them just as I did when I smoked. It actually helped fight my cravings. Lastly, be kind to yourself. The health benefits of kicking the habit far outweigh a few extra pounds you may end up with.0

Nicotine is an appetite suppressant, so weight gain is a super common side effect of quitting smoking. Especially for people who trade out their cigarettes for stuff like mints, gum, candy, sunflower seeds like wolfman mentioned, since obviously those have calories.0

Congratulations! I'd rather be a bit heavier than smoke.
Quitting smoking and taking up exercising instead sometimes works! Also helps your lungs to recover. Doesn't have to be high-intensity, just whatever you can do right now.
Best of luck!1 -
