"Fight" "War" and "Battles"...Why?

I see so many people on the forums refer to their weight loss path as these things. My question is why? I've never quite understood this...why losing weight has to be associated with such negative terminology...

Hard to say why others say it, but I know for me its more of a disease, and I have to "fight" myself everyday to not make the wrong decisions, which is my battle, with my mind....

It does give the impression that it's something that can be lost - and that may not be the healthiest way to view things. This is about improving our lives - making positive changes. Losing weight is a happy side effect of being healthier.

There's no battle to wage.

I equate those terms to the fight or flight syndrome, the context of all three of those words deem that a challenge is in order, you either fight or flight as its our bodies natural response. Most here choose to fight because its an internal fight, war, battle with our minds and our bodies to accomplish our weight loss goals..

Not everyone is a pacifist, so not everyone sees these terms as negative.

    It's because we are winners.

I've never heard of anyone winning a journey...

LOL, I see that one a lot...especially in regards to one's "journey" on a fad diet. I guess it's just always seemed odd to me that something so positive like getting healthy and losing weight would be looked at as a "fight"...something negative. I dunno, maybe it's just me!

amen to that! I prefer fight or battle to journey. War means action. I am a pacifist though! lol

    I agree with this.

I see it as fighting against my old bad habits. If I don't fight against my old bad habits I will lose the war and go back to being obese.

    "It's because we are winners.

I don't know... I never really thought about it. I don't use the words journey, or fight, or war or battle in reference to my weight loss attempts.

I don't have an issue with fight, war or battle. I think it's an internal battle... it's a struggle to overcome those parts of ourselves that we might not like (laziness, over indulgence, unhealthy food choices) so I can understand why that terminology is used and I don't think it's necessarily negative.

I agree with others who've said journey is an annoying term. But I have a personal issue with the word journey. Last year I heard it all the freaking time from my RCIA group and they drove me CRAZY! Argh. I get irritated just remembering it now. Hahahaha.

For me personally - every day seems to be a battle or a war because I'm constantly fighting against the impulse to make unhealthy food choices, to fill my own head with negative thoughts, and to get up off the couch to work my butt off. I don't necessarily think of them as bad words, its just shows really how hard losing weight can be. I quit smoking after 25 years cold turkey. Didn't really gain any weight, didn't turn into a witch. I wish that losing weight could be that easy. But can't give up food so always fighting the good fight to live & work with it.

Not everyone is a pacifist, so not everyone sees these terms as negative.

What does pacifism have to do with it?

Maybe nothing, but the question seemed to be coming from a pacifist POV, based on the wording.

I never thought to call it anything. I eat less food, I exercise, I get smaller. It's not really all that theme worthy. Battling Cancer, sure, but like, a waffle?
