HELP! My evenings are killing me!

Ok, so I do super well all day. I eat pretty good breakfasts (usually a bowl of Fiber One or Fiber Plus cereal with light soy milk and maybe a soy yogurt). My lunches are good as well (maybe some leftovers and a salad. Today I have soup and steamed broccoli). By midday I've eaten about 1100 of my 2000 calorie limit. Dinners consist of lean meals (tonight may be tamale pie or a chicken bake of some kind). I feel full after all my meals. I drink my daily intake of water and usually some extra. However, at about 10:30 at night, I'm STARVING! I chug the water and that helps for a bit. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do? How do you curb those late night hunger spells?

Eat your dinner later, closer to 10:30 and then you won't be hungry then. I suppose you can keep yourself fairly busy until then so you don't get too hungry? Don't listen to the nonsense about not eating later, it doesn't matter when you eat. I personally don't eat too much during the day if at all and have most of my calories in the evening, nighttime. I go to bed real happy this way0

Go to bed! Don't eat anything...just go to sleep!0
-
Brush your teeth... food is SO not appealing when you're minty fresh0

I live with kids so eating later isn't much of an option. Latest we eat is 6:30. Maybe some healthy snacks like celery and carrots?
I wish I could go to bed early but that doesn't work well. I am usually working when this hits me. I go to bed around midnight at the earliest.
I guess my thing is, I don't understand why I get so hungry when I'm eating really filling meals....
I have brushed my teeth and that does seem to help a bit!0 -

I agree. I have the same problem. The only reason I go to bed early is so I don't eat. The plus side is I wake up early and get to clean and have some time to myself before my family wakes up0 -
I snack on air popped popcorn. It really helps me. There are lots of different toppings you can try for barely any calories.0
-
Drink a glass of milk. It does the trick for me. It provides less than 100 calories (I drink fat free milk) and nutrients. I never go to bed hungry.0

Do you drink a lot of diet soda? I drank TONS, and was always fighting the hunger pangs at night. I cut my intake down to 3 per day (which is less than half of what I usually have) and upped my water a bunch, and it has realllly helped stop the feelings of hunger in the evening. It also got me past a 6 week loss plateau and I've lost another 15 pounds.
Whenever I do feel like I want to eat, I go to bed. I have a habit of staying up late so if I make myself get in bed I'm not as likely to binge.
Good luck!0 -
Are your dinners full of refined carbs and starches? These will make you hungry an hour later. They only feel satisfying for an hour or so. Your blood sugar will spike, insulin will spike, then your sugar will crash
> major hunger.
I would suggest eating a small protein packed snack as your "dinner" with the kids and have your real dinner later.0 -

I could try a glass of soy. I can't stand the taste of animal milk. Ick!0 -
I think it's silly to expect to go 5-6 hours without getting hungry. Personally, I find that the healthier and more balanced I eat, the quicker I get hungry as it seems those foods seem to work together and burn faster. I try to eat every 3ish hours though.
I agree with having some popcorn, there are 100 calorie snack bags that are a nice low-calorie fairly satisfying snack.0 -
I have the same problem! I'm a single mom that works full time plus I'm in school...so I usually do my school work after my daughter goes to bed. Well, I get the munchies! I've found that sometimes if I chew a piece of gum it helps (they tallk about that trick on Biggest Loser). I also have gotten into the habit of keeping the Popsicle brand popsicles (the box with the oragnge, cherry and grape) on hand...originally for my daughter, but then I got hooked on them! I love icecream, so this seems to be a good substitue for me and they are only 45 calories!0

Try eating more frequently, and up your protein. I'm on 3 meals and 3 snacks a day, which means eating something every few hours. Meals are minimum 300 calories; snacks are minimum 150, and need to include protein. So snacks are greek yogurt, nuts, cheese and crackers, things like that. The protein helps me feel more full. I have found I'm not craving the nighttime snack as much, as long as I don't skip the snacks in the daytime.0

I have been drinking a HUGE, like 32 oz glass of mainly water with a less than a 1/4 of cranberry juice added, and that seems to fill me up better than just water!0

I would say - try to have a little snack with some protein in it at that time. Or, my quesiton would be is it REAL hunger or is it possibly hunger from habit? I have a hard time with evenings - I would eat to relieve anxiety. I am adressing that issue and my need to snack in the evenings is diminishing. Assuming you are really and truly hungry - like I said, you might want to save some calories for a little evening snack.0

i have a food slot for "evening snack/dessert" - i eat my dinner and then, usually about an hour and a half later, i will have a quick, sweet snack. cottage cheese and fruit, peice of dark chocolate, jello sugar free pudding snack, skinny cow bar.
i do better this way, not just b/c you need the snack about 2 hrs after eating, but b/c it's "dessert like" i feel like i haven't been deprived of anything i want.
save 100 - 150 cals and have a snack!0 -

Weird. I can't eat breakfast UNLESS I've brushed my teeth.0 -
I reserver 100 calories for strawberries and I eat them before going to bed, after dinner. They make me feel "oh I still have something to eat after the dinner". This works 90% of the times.0
-
Try a handful of almonds or a can of green beans. Green beans are low calorie but any vegetable would probably work.0
-
Keep some of those gummy vitamins handy. They are sweet and full of nutrients and probably will do the trick. LOL.0
-
I always save at least 100 calories for a bed time snack like hot chocolate with skimmed milk or a piece of toasted soda bread with a tiny bit of jam. I can't sleep if I'm hungry.0
-
try lean protein, i usually boil 1 egg and eat it with plenty of water ... help stop the late craving.0
-
Save 100-150 calories for a snack. Cutting that off of your dinner probably won't make much difference in the nighttime hunger you feel.0

Hello, sorry to hear you are having a hard time with your evenings. I can totally relate, for many years they were always my downfall, I had a great day till I starved at night ...I had to figure out sooo much to finally get results...I will tell you this, sticking to the caloric intake is not good enough, some foods leave your stomach faster than others, allowing for you to feel hungry even after you've consumed the right amount of calories. The idea from SoDamnHungry to save 100-150 cals from the day for a nite time snack is great and it actually helped me...But the key is which snack? If you eat a mini muffin that's a 100 calorie snack that will be swallowed in one bite and go through your stomach like crazy. Milk (unless you are lactose intolerant) pretty much the same. The best snack for me was baby carrots with hummus, it takes so long to chew and it's not just carbs because the hummus adds flavor and some fat and protein which allows it to stay in your stomach a while. Other great snacks are a green salad but add some cheese, chicken or ham to a very light dressing (like a vinagrette). The point is that the 100 cal snack has to take at least 10-15 minutes to eat so that your mental triggers get in synch with your body. Another favorite of mine was an apple with 1/2 oz of my favorite cheese. they are small snacks so encourage yourself to take very small bites to allow for your brain to catch up with your body
The second point I wanted to make is to make sure you have a well balanced diet during the day, simple carbs are digested quickly, even those that have added fiber, so make sure you have fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, protein, dairy and some fat in every meal to avoid the up downs during the day, or worst at night. Hope this helps
I've so far lost 58 lbs since I started my diet...still got 50 more to go...I've dieted since I was 15. Trust me...I can relate0 -

I agree with this! Sometimes I find myself wanting to eat something after dinner, only to realize I'm not really hungry, I just want to eat something! In fact, this happened just last night, so I munched on some carrots and it did the trick. If you are actually hungry, then have something filling and protein rich, like greek yogurt.
Good luck!0 -
I like the carrot and hummus suggestion! I've noticed a big change in the past few months and I haven't been as hungry but the last week or two I've been working late and getting hungry. It may be a habit thing, I'm not sure, but all these suggestions are really great and I think they'll work!0

I tend to save my dinner. If i know i've still got it to come, i can easily fend off any random hunger pangs. After dinner, sugarfee polos work a charm for me0

Go to BED!! I know it harsh but seriously...the less sleep you get the hungerier you will be. Getting adequate amounts of sleep will aid in your weight loss significantly.
If you cant sleep take Melatonin (natural sleep hormone) to get your body adjusting to resting again...
Seriously..go to bed!0 -

I always get munchie around 10:30, so I changed my diary to accomodate for it. I generally don't eat dinner until 730 or 8, and then make sure I have enough calories for a bed time snack or meal. My suggestion is to save a few calories and eat them late. You can't always make your body fit into the schedule you want to it to, so sometimes you need to make your schedule fit your body.0 -
