Good breakfast to give you energy at the gym?

Before the diet, I'd eat a bagel (carb heaven) but I'm avoiding them now because they are too calorie dense. I decided to have greek yogurt instead, which is mostly protein. I tried going to the gym 2 hours later for my usual 1.5 hour workout and i felt like i was dying haha. Even the elderly guys were cycling faster than me. I burned out and had to leave after 45 min.

whats a good breakfast to eat that is low in calories but provides you with enough energy for your workout?

How about adding a couple tablespoons of oat bran to your yogurt? That's what I have for breakfast. Or cottage cheese? I find cottage cheese to have a bit more staying power than yogurt.

I mostly have oats for breakfast - they fill you up and aren't too heavy in your stomach. I mix them with seeds, nuts and some raisins. Yummy.

You may be waiting too long after eating. I work out in the morning.. I wake up @530, immediately eat half a cup of cottage cheese, wait about 30 minutes, then run. After, I have soymilk & oatmeal (my REAL breakfast!)

I have a piece of toast with almond butter before my workout and then something after. I have also done oatmeal or a egg on top of some toast.
  • I usually have a Luna Bar pre-work out (30 minutes) before. It's filling and keeps me energized through my intense workouts. Then I have a light breakfast afterwards like a whole grain english muffin w/ Peanut Butter, Oatmeal or Kashi Cereal. I also think you maybe working out to late after your eat.

    Good Luck!

I wouldn't base my decision to change my diet on one trial (one lousy workout). If you like eating yogurt, try it many times and see how your body reacts.

"Correlation is not causation" which means that just because even A happened followed by event B, it does not mean that A caused B. The reason you had a bad workout might have had absolutely nothing to do with what you ate (which I'd suspect is the case).

Yogurt is one food recommended for breakfast for runners but my suspicion is that those foods are aimed at post-exercise needs instead of exercise needs. The reason for that is that we have, generally speaking, enough glycogen to power us for at least 60 minutes of running (depending on who you read) so, unless you're working out for at least an hour, your body may already have the glucose it needs.

I keep repeating this but I LOVE my breakfast. All I have to do is change the yogurt flavor and its a new breakfast everyday. (almost haha)

    1/4 cup of Fiber1
    1/4 cup of Honey/Almonds/Flax Kashi
1/2 cup of DRY cottage cheese (Loads of protein and low in sodium and fat...)
1 countainer of Yogurt 1/3 cup

I mix all of the above and I love it. Some people might not but seriously I am full for so long afterwards without eating too much. CALORIES: 245

Oatmeal, Shredded Wheat (not the sugar coated ones either) make sure that you are eating 100% Whole Grains. If you aren't then you are just eating empty calories. If it says Enriched on the package it means its not 100% whole wheat. even subway doesn't have 100% whole wheat bread.

I prefer working out on an empty stomach. For some reason, i just cannot face any food within a few hours of waking up.

100 calorie Thomas English Muffin light (8g fiber!) + 1 tbsp peanut butter (95 cals) OR laughing cow cheese (35 cals)

I eat that before my long runs and generally a glass of milk or greek yogurt after.

On the rare mornings I am up later than 4-5am and have time to grab something before the gym I will have a shake. 1 cup unsweetened almond milk, favorite flavor of protein powder, 1/4 cup oatmeal, and a few ice cubes.
