Trying to be half the person you used to be

I'm wondering how many other people have shared my realization that if they were literally cut in half (vertically down the middle) the BMI would still say each half was obese.

BMI is NOT a good weight to judge health. As always the current medical communities "status quo" is not up to date. BODY COMPOSITION is where it is at my friend
Try getting under 20% bodyfat and say the heck with BMI.0 -

I think BMI is a good tool when you're actually overweight. It makes it quite apparent where you stand in relation to where you should be. It becomes less useful as you get into the normal weight range for your height and are physically fit and then body fat is a better indicator of health and fitness.0 -
If I were cut in half I would probably be on the high end of normal, MAYBE.

A larger than average amount of muscle can make BMI numbers look bad. You doc can best advise you there. The stuff on-line is just an average or information guide. Good luck!0

Well - I started out at 398 lb and a BMI of 53.9 around 3 months ago, and I've lost 42lb and dropped to a BMI of 48.2. To be in the upper end of the normal range I need to hit 184lb, so yeah, I reckon I've got to loose a half-me Hope I'll still be smiling in another year and a half or so, when I'm still working on it....0 -
Yup, if I was cut in half now, I'm pretty sure I'd still be classed as obese. Definitely would've before I started losing!0

Personally I broke my "I'm 2 obese people" and I used it to set my next goal which is to be "less than 2 bmi "healthy" people".
I kind of started this conversation to highlight how limited the BMI scale is and to find other people who are trying to be healthy while dealing with what can only be described as a large frame. I think we have challenges that are slightly different from other people trying to lose weight.
To clarify yes at my top measured weight of 412lbs if cut in half each of my halves at 5'11" would be considered obese weighing 206 lbs each. This is regardless of the fact my waist measurement has always been at least 8 inches smaller than my chest and it's easy to feel my bones at all of my joints.
I have a hard time ordering any type of fitted clothing even from specialty retailers. I just want to let others in a similar situation know they aren't alone.0
