    Fault Lines by Emily Itami - excellent
    Smashed - Junji Ito collection, very good and eerie.
    Tomie by Junji Ito is next up.

    My daughter read "The Westinghouse Game" for school, absolutely loved it. I promised I would give it a try. Managed to get about 50 pages in and had to stop. Gah, the writing style was just so clashy I couldn't get into the story being told due to the mechanics of the written word.

    I seem to remember really enjoying it when I was a kid--but not being impressed as an adult.

    There were many books I was not allowed access to as a teen (crazy parents) that I'm pretty sure I would have loved but have been severely disappointed in when reading them later.

    The mark of a really good book is endurance. Late high school, I read a lot of Barbara Micheals (Barbara, not Judith!) and owned a lot of them. Fast forward more than 20 years, they feel out dated and flat. Now, I roll my eyes. I prefer to enjoy the memory of them rather than the actuality.

    She also wrote under the name Elizabeth Peters...those have generally held up for me, though that is a series and toward the end, I didn't enjoy them as much. Sadly, she died before finishing the series.

    Just started the Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles. I loved A Gentleman in Moscow so high hopes for this one.

    Currently: Bears Behaving Badly by Mary Janice Davidson. She's not a good wtiter. She has a bad editor. But she's funny sometimes. And how could I possibly pass on a title like that.

    In the past week or two, I've read a bunch of Kathy Reichs: The Bone Collection, The Bone Code, A Conspiracy of Bones, Bones Never Lie, Bones of the Lost. these are pretty good. If you go in expecting anything remarkably similar to the Bones TV show, you WILL be confused and disappointed. They share a startling lack of similarity.

    I also read Laurel Hamilton's Rafael (yes, really, do not follow my bad example) and two Karen MacInerney's:Killer Jam and Murder Most Maine. She is terrible. Yikes!

    ..... and if you like Cormac McCarthy (or even Larry McMurtry), you need to check out James Carlos Blake.

    He's the best author most of us don't know.

    Start with "Wildwood Boys" or (my favorite) "In the Rogue Blood".

    I've read damn near everything he's put to pen and paper.

    Is no one reading?!?

    So, I recently read The Editor by Steven Rowley. I really enjoyed it. Juxtaposed with Time Quest (film...Bruce Campbell) we watched yesterday which was also about Jackie Kennedy and was not nearly as good. Before that, I did a re-read of Terry Pratchett's The Shepherd's Crown, which is fun.
