Taking a break?

My boyfriend keeps hounding me that I should take a break from the gym one day every week. Usually I go for an hour everyday- but I feel like even if I go for an hour and just WALK on the treadmill it is better than not going. I know my body needs to rest, but I don't have a job and don't do much if I don't go to the gym. I feel like most people need a day to rest because they do the gym plus other physically demanding things...Am I wrong in not wanting to take a day off, but maybe only slow it down a bit?

Do what you feel is right for you. Your boyfriend loves you and is trying to help I'm sure, but its your body. Tell him you know he's trying to help and you appreciate it but you've got this.0

I'm with you on that one. If you were working out every day like a crazy woman, then a day or two of rest would be necessary. If you are going to the gym to walk and just get out of the house.... that is taking a break from the day0

I ran into the same thing with my family when I started exercising. I had a very sedentary job. I was working from home so not as much stress either. I felt like the least I could do was exercise everyday. I didn't feel like I needed a day off because I didn't do anything physically demanding except work out.
I think you should listen to your instincts and your body. Maybe your boyfriend wants some quality one on one time with you and feels like he is not getting it while you are at the gym. See if you could take him for a walk or hike, or bike ride. Something active you can do together. Just a thought.
Best wishes.
One other note,, if you do decide to take a day off, make sure you do a push yourself to the limits kind of workout the day before. That way your body has something to do on that day off. Heal and recover.0 -
Out of all the advice I've been given regarding fitness and health, taking a rest day was the most important and showed the most results for me. It allows for your muslces to lengthen and grow, recooperate from hard workouts, interval training, etc. Walking can be considered a rest day if you take it super easy. Its hard to rest when we want results asap and think we need to go at it all the time to continue to lose, but it is important to let our bodies rest.0

i find that a recovery/rest day is very beneficial to my work outs. there are days that because of work i don't do any type of excersise, but those days are days i really watch my food intake. i actually find that i still lose a lot of weight on those days.
i believe, like your bf, that you should only really work out 6 days a week, and that one of those days should be a recovery work out, like a swim. you may benefit from a light work out day as your recovery day. maybe a pilaties or yoga class instead of a hard run? it can help break up a monotonous routine, and confuse your body.0 -
A recovery day can be active recovery - like a walk or some yoga. You don't want to go b@lls to the wall every single day of every single week - b/c your muscles do need time to repair. But any kind of light exercise counts as a recovery day.0

I understand, I stay at home too. It might be the type of exercise you are getting. Meaning if you are doing any strength training or vigours cardio you might need to take a break but just going and walking on the treadmill would count the same as what someone else might get in at "work". Your supposed to get at least 7,000 steps in a day, although 10,000 is recomended for a healthy lifestyle, and even though I do alot of cleaning once i started wearing my pedometer I found I wasnt doing this many. So I just started to do more. Like i walk in place while I vaccum and have 2 carpet crawlers so I do this every day at least once. lol. Or pace while I'm watching one of my shows or reading, or dance while i'm folding laundry, doing dishes, making meals. Anything to get my body in motion that people would do more while outside of the house. I know just getting more active in my day has helped. Had to just get up and start moving more. I have started to do the 30 day shred now. Tried it for 5 days and really could feel a great difference but my joints just couldn't take the workout and I took a break and that ended up being 2 weeks but I'm starting again today with a friend. Being more active during the day and than adding in a vigourous workout, after about a month, has helped me. If your body is tired it might need a break just don't let it be a 2 week break. lol. Try to plan something active to do instead if you aren't going to go. That way your mind is still on track.0

It really depends on why you are going to the gym every day.0

thanks for all the help! I think that I will decide to switch it up one day a week...that seems like the best idea. And take it easy but still go and do something active.
I usually go on the elliptical or arc trainer for an hour...burn like 800 calories. So the switch would be much needed.
