Most everything that I read places me at doing a 5K in 30 minutes. Is that accurate?? I'm nowhere near there. Thanks for the input.

The perfect time is one that you feel that you have pushed yourself hard, and given 100%+ effort. Take that time, and shave it by 15 seconds the next time. Rinse, repeat.

Agreed! My first 5k in January of this year was 40:56 and my fast was 32:46. My goal is to eventually hit a sub 30, but listen to your body and give it your best. You're truly only competing with your own times. Have fun and enjoy the process!

A great deal of this depends on how long you have been running, age, height, weight, conditioning. I have been running for 4 years... I am 40 years old, weigh 220, and am 5'11". My personal best is just over 26 minutes on a 5K, but it took me a couple of years to get there. In my first year, I was averaging about a 38 minute, 5K.

I wouldn't worry about speed. Enjoy the race, speed will come the longer you have been running.

    My best is 35:34

It is HARD to get speed when you are 5'2" like me with tiny legs. I read about people doing 5.0 on the treadmill to warm up and running at 6.5 or 7....that's INSANE to me, 7 is like an all out sprint for my life with zombies chasing me...
I warm up at 4.0 and run at 5 or 5.5 max. I think running downhill I might hit 6.0, so I could do 5K in 30 minutes if the entire thing was downhill
  • It doesn't matter what anyone says about what your time "should" be. Just run at your pace, try to do a little better every time, but most important, HAVE FUN!!

hiya.i am 5'3". there is no right time for a 5k, i would say just work in improving your current speed and it will get better. i started off doing 5k at 38mins in june. i ran my first race on sunday and my time was 26:11, the more you run the quicker you get. Most of all enjoy it!

That would be a 10 minute mile, or 6mph.

That would be slightly faster than a 10 minute mile. 5 Kilometers equals 3.1 miles.

I was rounding.. 3.1 miles is 9.7 minute mile so I just rounded up to ten minute mile since we are talking 18 seconds.

Thank you all. I was just wondering what a good average might be. My husband- who thinks he is "booking" on the treadmill- in all reality, is not. Now, we are BOTH inspired to push a little harder.
