New Dad

Hi I have recently had my first child and whilst I was semi healthy before hand ( I would go to gym regularly and keep one eye on diet) I have let myself go over last few months of Christmas holidays and a very pregnant wife to look after and I now find it very hard to get back on track with having a new baby in the mix. The baby really motivates me to want to be healthier but there’s never been so little time..
Any one any advice?

The first 25 years are the hardest.
Just fit in what exercise and general movement you can, when you can.
For me that was late evening, work lunchbreaks and even early mornings (which I detest).
Exercise with your children whether that's pushing them around or running around with them later on.
e.g. I became a youth rugby coach to get some exercise in rather than stand on the sidelines watching my son and daughter.
Also sharing childcare duties allows both parents to get some "me time".
The diet side of health and weight management is far easier to fit in TBH with a bit of planning. Plus of course you want your children to be growing up seeing a good example. Children can be a great motivator, I quit smoking the day I brought my son home as never wanted him to think smoking was normal.6 -
Concentrate first and foremost on diet right now while sleep patterns are completely disrupted. In a few weeks once that part settles down somewhat will be a good time to start thinking about high intensity exercise (think gym); until then think more calisthenics you can do at home. Little bits add up; try dropping to the floor to do a set of pushups every commercial break during a game, and your arms will be jelly by the time the game ends, lol.
While you wait to resume gym workouts, take the time to think about how you can rearrange them to be more efficient, getting more done in less time. Before becoming a father I could easily justify 2 hour gym sessions; now I want to be in and out in 45 minutes.
I eat far better now as a father than I ever did pre-kids, which included forcing myself to eat lots of vegetables as a "good example." The odd part is, I found I actually ENJOY most of the vegetables that I used to despise, either from a change in flavor preference or from the way my body responds to actually getting the proper nutrition compared to my college days, lol.
Whatever comes of your diet and exercise patterns, all the changes will at times feel overwhelming, either from feeling too much is happening too fast or that you're feeling pressured to "give up everything that's ME just because of the baby." Feeling resentment towards the baby and/or your wife will come and go, and are completely natural; they don't make you a bad husband/father. Acting out on those feelings can be quite negative, but simply experiencing them is normal. When (not if, when) they happen, take a step back, breathe, realize change is a part of life, and this precious little one is going to become a huge part of your emotional world, if it hasn't happened already. Realize you are NOT losing you; you are ADDING him/her, and making your world a bigger, more wonderful place. I had a lot more fun and freedom when I was single; as a married father, my life is far more chaotic, stressful, and a source of anxiety which I wouldn't give up for my old life, because I am also fulfilled in a way I never knew existed before. So will you be. Just breathe, hold your wife every chance you get, reassure her that you're not going anywhere (she's just as rattled by all the changes as you are), and enjoy these precious moments with your little one. The memories you are making right now, good and bad, will be with you for the rest of your life. I often have trouble remembering what I had for dinner just yesterday; I remember like it was this morning bringing my little ones home from the hospital two decades ago.
You can do this. You got this.6 -
I feel ya and have been there. I gained a lot of weight in the first six months or so of my son’s life (he’s now three), but MFP helped me lose it. Gained some back during quarantine but after returning here I’ve been able to lose a lot of it. Feel free to add me.
