Hula Hooping

So I'm thinking of adding hula hooping to my exercise routine...What are your experiences with hula hooping? Where do you buy your hula hoops? If your in the Northern NJ area where do you take your classes?

Thanks!!

Just read this post from 10 years ago... I wonder if you have been hula hooping over the years? I got my weighted (3lb) hula hoop from Amazon in 2009 and have used it now and then. At this time, I decided to use it daily. My goal is to tighten my stomach muscles. Even though my weight is fine (BMI 20.8), my stomach is sticking out somewhat, has always been. Currently, I'm doing 20 min daily - 10 min clockwise, 10 min counterclockwise. Started 4 days ago. Felt sore from the impact after the first day, but it's OK. Hopefully, this will help with my occasional lower back pain.

The person who posted that hasn't posted since 2015, so I don't know that they'll reply. Maybe some other folks will reply, though.

Hula hooping is useful and fun - though I don't do enough of it, as my technique is . . . frustrating.

Given what you say about your stomach, have you taken a look at your posture? Posture issues are really common these days, seems like rounded shoulders/chin-forward and/or anterior pelvic tilt, either of which can emphasize the belly area, and the latter can cause back pain. There are exercises to improve them, if that might be part of the picture.

Hiya, I've bought one and am enjoying it but posted https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10854303/ as I too wonder if it does much. I use it for 30 minues a day but can only do counterclockwise - that's what I learned as a kid! I had pretty bad bruising at first but it's gone away now.

There are some great youtube videos but I'm sticking with just going round and round for now!

AnnPT77, you are absolutely right about bad posture - this is another problem I'm working on.

    Hi bonnielassies,
I also could only do counterclockwise. I saw a few youtube videos on the subject and it looked like people who never did hula hooping would learn how to do it in both directions within a week. I started doing clockwise and at first, was only able to keep the hoop up for a few seconds at a time. Every day, it got better, and in a week, I was able to keep it moving for straight eight minutes. I do not see improvements with my stomach yet - it must be too early, but my back is getting better.
