running at 4miles an hour- how many cal burned?

Hi!
So ok I'll admit it that my running speed is most peoples fast walking speed (at least I'm trying!!) I worked out that I run about 4miles an hour, but I can only find running at 5miles an hour or walking at 4miles an hour. I figure that running 4 miles an hour would burn more calories that just walking (since your propelling yourself more) but I don't know how much more. To try and be accurate I've been entering my runs as 'walking 3.5miles an hour uphill'. But what do you think I should be entering? most of my runs are fairly hilly (which is probably why i'm so slow)
thanks!

Take a guess go between the 3 mile if they have it and 5 mile. depending on how hard your working and how excerted you are at the end and you age height and weight prob 300-500 calories. If your using a treamill it should give yo an rough estimate.0

Actually, the calories burned is almost the same....burning calories=energy expenditure....you are essentially burning the same ammount of calories because the time from point A to point B is just slower when walking, but the ammount of energy it took you to get there is pretty much the same.
There are studies that go against that though, there are studies that support that thought, it can be argued till the cows come home.
But I burn about 130 calories a mile, either running or walking.0 -
meh, i just started running and i'm doing a 10 minute mile myself, also pretty hilly area. the important thing is that you are doing it.
i don't remember the specifics, but hill running is more beneficial to building strength and speed, plus my favorite thing is that you won't get bored with your run like you would on a flat. plus the best thing: for every uphill their is a downhill!!!
btw, something i've started doing is picking a marker maybe a half a mile away and trying to sprint it out to their and then jogging it out until my heart rate recovers. Just to increase recovery and improving heart rate.0 -
try this...

I use runkeeper when I run, and sometimes a HRM, and surprisingly it's very close to it.0 -
First off KUDOS for you!! You are running!! I think it is wonderful that you are out there and you are doing it!! I don't have an answer for you as far as cals burnned, I know it have to do with weight. Sorry that I am not much help.0

You will burn the same per mile regardless of speed0

Traditionally, the "minimum" speed for running has been listed as 5.0 mph. The research that has been done to establish energy prediction equations only applies to speeds 5.0 MPH AND ABOVE.
It has been acknowledged (by the ACSM for example) that many people are now running at speeds below 5.0 mph. The reason you can't find any reliable references for calories burned for speeds below that number is that there is no reliable research available. There are too many variations in gait, running style, etc, to develop prediction equations for those speeds.
You can look at it 2 ways. You can multiply your body weight in kg by 5 or 6 to get a rough idea of calories per hour. Or you can just not count the exercise calories. If you are putting yourself at a really low intake, then maybe add 200 calories on the days you run, OR just eat a little more all the time and not count exercise calories at all.
That's as accurate as you need to be.
PS: You burn the same calories per mile regardless of speed when comparing different walking speeds or when comparing different running speeds, but NOT when comparing walking to running. Unless you are comparing racewalking speeds to comparable slow running speeds, running ALWAYS burns more calories per unit of distance than walking.0 -
When I 1st started running, I was only @ 4.5mph and just logged it as walking @ 4.5. I knew I was burning more calories, but I would always rather underestimate on the calories out and overestimate on the calories in. That's just my personal strategy though. How many calories you burn per mile is VERY dependent upon your weight.0

I am 5'6" and currently 185. I am in training with a local Run/Walk group and using RunKeeper to track my runs. In eight months, I have gone from "just" walking at 20+ min/mile (<3 mph) to run/walk intervals at 13:00 min/mile overall, or >4.5 mph.
Just like joehempel, runkeeper (which knows my gender, height, & weight) is reporting calorie burn of about 130 calories per mile, but I only log it into MFP between 100-110 per mile. haha! So for my 6 mile outing yesterday, I put in 700 cals (Even though runkeeper and the runnersworld tool reported 839 calories.)
Oh, and did you see that you can create your own Exercises? You are not restricted to picking from the list. My activity is listed as "Interval Run/Walk <15:00 min/mile (>4 mph)".
Keep up the good work! It is irrelevant how "slow" you are -- you are still faster than that guy on the couch!!!0 -
Running = 0.75 cals x body weight (lbs) x miles
Walking = 0.53 cals x body weight (lbs) x miles0
