I've just signed up to another free weight loss site out of curiosity. It has calculated my daily calorie intake to lose 2lbs per week at sedentary excercise level (same as mfp) as 935 calories a day!! That can't be enough surely. Mfp allows me 1200 .

i would say no 1200 is plenty low enough BUT on the other hand people who have weight loss surgery have less than 800 alot of the time and are fine!
    but i would recomend 1200!

Well, if you don't have a lot to lose, then losing 2 lbs per week may not be a realistic, healthy goal for you. That is probably why it is so low. Recalculate at a pound a week and you will probably be closer to a more reasonable caloric target.
  • no matter what goal I put in, MFP gives me 1200. I think because women shouldn't eat below 1200 daily.

there are lots of views on eating your exercise calories or not, if you want to know mine send me a message. I dont want to start an argument on MFP :)

MFP will not set you below 1200 calories a day. If you put in that you want to lose 2 lbs a week it will only take your calories down to that 1200. If you want to lower your calories you have to do it manually (not that I'm recommending that at all).
  • I'm not sure about the way either site works, but I do know that according to the American College of Sports Medicine, the lowest recommended calorie value for any female, trying to lose weight or not, is 1200 calories (1800 for males). This is both so that your body receives adequate nutrition and also so that you don't enter "starvation mode". If you're interested, the article can be found here: http://www.acsm.org/AM/Template.cfm?Section=Home_Page&Template=/CM/ContentDisplay.cfm&ContentID=7788

I would be leery of that 935. Likely the other site was going off of pure mathematical values for calorie burning without taking this into consideration. If you're at 1200, even if you don't lose 2 pounds per week, you will definitely be losing weight, and it will be in a safer manner.

that's because 2 lbs a week is a lot for someone who doesnt have a lot of weight to lose. sorry :-) I was disappointed when the lowest number I got was .9 lbs a week too, but it's healthier and more sustainable in the end.

I agree... you can't get your daily nutrients on 935 a day, I could eat that just in protein. 1200 is fine, but you gotta do some kind of physical activity, even if it a walk around the block twice a day. Good luck.

Personally I'd go for the 1,200. There are arguments around going lower, ie, pre gastric surgery, petite ladies sometimes need to go to 1,000 - but my personal experience as a 5 7" female under 1,000 cals is great initial loss then grumpy, freezing cold all the time, lethargic and unable to exercise. For me 1,200 minimum is the best way.
  • I think 935 is too low... You would probably be frustrated trying not to go over it. Also i think from what i've read that it's too low and your body could enter starvation mode, so your metabolism will slow down and then after you're done losing the weight, when you try to maintain and up your calories you would lose back all the weight you've lost... I would recommend maybe having a goal of 1 lb per week, and eat no less than 1200 a day. Hope it helps!

I eat approx 950 a day and i'm ok. Guess it depends how hungry you get and what sort of foods you like though I guess.

MFP will let you put in 2 lb loss a week, then give you 1200 and tell you how many pounds you will potentially lose eating 1200 calories.

I gained 10 pounds after losing 36 and now I get more calories it eat:bigsmile: NOT a good thing I say!

1200, eat your exercise calories, and you will not only lose weight, but be happy and healthy while doing it!

I am back on track today WOOT!:flowerforyou:

I agree with what the other posters say my only other comment would be that farther down the road when a person that eats too few calories makes their goal they will have a hard time maintaining their lower weight. Its not going to be easy for someone to stay at that low calories the rest of their life and get the nutrition they need.
Losing the weight fast is not the goal. Losing the weight and keeping it off is. (at least for me and I would think most people)

It's important to point out that difference. The difference between the site mentioned by the OP and MFP is that 1200 calorie "floor" (another reason why MFP has a little more "thought" behind its design that many other sites).

Basically, if your daily requirements minus 1000 calories/day (amt needed to lose 2 lb a week) falls below 1200, then MFP essentially says, "sorry--you have to take what you get".

To be honest, if someone's weight is low enough that, without exercise, they cannot incur a 1000 cal/day deficit without going below 1200, they should not be trying for 2lb a week anyhow. Personally, I think one of the bigger roadblocks that people put in the way of their success is to automatically jump to the "1200/day" goal.

I think it all works out in the end. The weight loss might be "slower" for someone who is starting at a lighter weight, but smaller losses will be more apparent as well. A 10 lb loss for someone who weighs 150lb will be a lot more noticeable than for someone who weighs 250.

The only thing for me, that i need to see good numbers each week, or i will just give up..
I burn 1000 - 12000 cal 6x a week, if i eat that back, then what`s the point of my hard work..
I will slow down , to lose 1lb wk when i reach my second mini goal, 125.lb.
But i really wanna be 125 on my 44-th birthday on December..
  • I have always heard that under 1200 calories is not healthy. Maybe keep the calories at 1200 and up the activity a little? Good luck!
