Opinions, Healthy Debate, and... Name-Calling?

When you post on here, you're inviting the opinions of others. Sorry, but you are. You might not like some of those opinions, and some people might not like yours. That's OK. We don't all have to agree. We can have a healthy debate. Debating, by the way, involves using FACTS to support you opinions. Since this is not a "formal" debate, I would even say sarcasm is expected (in actual debate, you lose points for sarcasm). I'm just trying to figure out how name-calling fits into this. I don't get how calling someone else stupid (or whatever your naughty name of choice may be) helps you get your opinion across. We're not in middle school anymore, people! We can disagree without being that immature. I know, I know... A lot of you are now going to prove how awesome ~cough, cough~you are by calling me names. Whatever. I've probably been called worse by better. I also know I'm inviting some snarky comments here, so have at it! Bring on your sarcasm! I can take it.

  • I am glad I have not run into anyone on here (yet) who has resorted to go back to old school days and acting like a child. All the people have been super supportive, and have helped me out. Sorry that some people can just be so rude!
  • Oh no I left my usual forum due to people fighting the whole time. Is this an everyday occurrence?

This is not an everyday occurrence. The vast majority of people on here of undeniably fabulous. There are a few, however, who think it's OK to resort to name-calling and sarcasm (even though you can't hear voice inflection on here) to get their point across. There are others still who seem to be vying for the title of best snarky poster.

    Agree!
  • Unfortunately I think dialectics have become a lost art. Socrates and Plato should probably be mandatory reading for all students growing up.
Resorting to name-calling, shouting-down and other schoolyard bully techniques actually betrays a flawed and weak ability to reason and argue a point.

Yeah I hear ya, I think some people just enjoy it for some reason. I've decided not to make anymore "opinion" posts I guess which they would prob say to me "good" but whatever I don't post things to create arguments, it was not my intention so I'm not going to involve myself with certain issues anymore it just seems to stress people out.

I agree! It's the reason I don't post much any more. I have several NSV's I would love to share but it isn't worth it for the things immature people say just to stir things up.

I am glad I haven't run into anything like that here. I did post something yesterday that I felt a few people over read but nothing offensive was posted and nothing definitely in the realm of name calling. I just got opinions. I know a couple weeks ago, I had bigger problems on facebook then I ever did here after I posted an innocent little blurp that my dog could come home. I never really gave a lot of details but apparently the people involved in the underhanded taking of him got upset about it and started name calling me and throwing insults there after reading their own illusions into the post. I still haven't picked him up yet due to it and had to remove the thread only for the insults to start by email. I was then required to block their email threats and the police will not do anything. Stupid thing was that most of it was to do with kids half my age (in and around my oldest daughter's age). Anyhow, it is amazing how people loose it so much on these things. Keep your head up. They are only degrading themselves.

Agree here. People can state opinions, but if you don't have facts to back them up, prepare to get refutation on your opinions because they are just that. And anecdotal evidence isn't evidence. If name calling resorts, in most cases that is usually a response from someone who has exhausted their limited knowledge or is refusing to look at posted evidence and returning a credible resource to refute.
