Pain when running... thoughts?

Hey guys, I've been running for about 3 months now and have gone through the Couch to 5k, currently doing the Bridge to 10k, midway through Week 2. I currently weigh 199lbs. This past week, I've struggled with my running because of a pretty intense pain in my side. The location of it is under my ribs on the right hand side, in pretty much the same place as a side stitch so I haven't been too concerned given that I usually just regulate that with my breathing and by making sure that I haven't eaten too soon before running.

It's been there the past 3 runs, not in the beginning, but definitely present at some stage. The last time, I had to stop because of it. What concerns me is that this weekend I've experienced the same pain when walking - at my normal pace, not too much exertion - when I'm barely out of breath. My thoughts on this are as follows:

1) A week ago just before I started to experience this pain, I did a workout video that was tough on my obliques and lower back, so it's possible it may be a pulled muscle

2) It could just be regular old side stitch and I may need to just focus and work more on my breathing when running

3) Something is going on internally, such as gallbladder issues - my mother has suffered with gallbladder problems for years and I read that losing weight can increase chances of gallstones

Anyway, I'm going to make an appointment to see a doctor as soon as possible to get it checked out, but just wondered if anyone had any thoughts on this or has experienced something similar. I actually haven't suffered with side stitch for weeks until this.

Thanks!

  • I have also been feeling this in the same exact spot!!! A week after the first initial pain it became so intense that I have stopped running. I haven't made it to the doctor yet, do to my crazy schedule. Let me know what you find out when you go to the doctor!

My guess would possibly be a cramp. It would depend on the water intake and all though to figure out. Good luck with it though.

I am known to get kidney stones once in a while. Usually I do not know I have them until they are about ready to pass.

The other possibility perhaps may be tearing the cartilage in the floating ribs which hurts as well.

I got side cramps a lot when i played soccer long ago. They are annoying.

Is the pain *only* while running/walking, or do you sometimes get the pain at rest? Do you ever get the pain after eating?

I have gotten some side stitches that made me have to just sit in some random person's yard to rest before being able to walk home. It was kind of embarrassing! But they can get really painful.

When you feel it slow your pace or stop and put your hand on your knees stooped over slow your breathing if that helps its just a side stitch if not please call your doc just to check it out I had a broken rib and did not know it i had thought it was just a stitch. Best of luck to you!

  • I am currently following the C25K program, well kind of...I am supposed to be on week 3 but I pushed myself and ran 7 min straight instead of 3. During that last min, I felt the exact pain in the exact location that you're talking abt. I walked the rest of the time at a fairly brisk pace (3.4mph) and the pain did not go away and I did hydrate before, during and after. I chalked it up to pushing myself. Maybe you pushed yourself too but I would get it checked out anyway just be on the safe side.

I haven't felt it today, but I've just walked around at a slow pace and not done any real activity. However, I do feel tender around that area and I also just noticed that when I twist to the right, it feels sore around my waist in kind of a lactic acid way. I'll be running tomorrow hopefully, so will try the stooping over and slowing breathing thing to see if that helps. Thanks for the advice!
