So one of the things I'm supposed to be working on is protein..the only meat I really eat is chicken..occasionally 96/4 ground beef..I don't like eggs, pork, fish, steak or pretty much anything else..

..so tonight I tried the Morningstar Tomato Basil burger..just okay IMO..anyone try any of their products that are good?

or any other suggestions?

Edit- I forgot to say..no protein shakes or bars..I'm supposed to get the protein from food..UGH

I don't really like meat either, I get my protein from whey protein shakes, protein bars, and I like the original garden burger burgers, morningstar farms veggie strips, and deli meats.

no ham, no turkey...nuts and peanut butter are good, but nuts tend to be pretty fatty..I know its good fat but I'm supposed to stick to 35 total grams..I should mention I exercise 10-12 hours of week of both strength and cardio classes,,

I don't eat meat at all. I get protein from beans. I soak and cook my own. Black beans, kidney, chickpeas and pinto are the ones I usually do.
    Also raw nuts.
I don't like any morningstar stuff, if I do get veggie burgers I get sunshine burgers....delish! A little pricey but yummy.
I like cheese, I usually use part skim mozzarella so a little lower in fat,but I don't use much.

I should write a song about all of my favorite vegan sources of protein! Because I love them and they're so good to me.

    Beans....
    1. rice and beans. Go to a carribbean (cuban, jamaican, puerto rican) restaurant and you'll know what all the hype is about
    2. rice and bean and veggie burritos w/ salsa. Try wild rice, which is actually not a real "rice" but is lower in calories and higher in protein than other rice.
    3. baked beans
    4. bbq beans/veggie chili

    quinoa...
this hippie food from the 70s has made a comeback bigtime! There are ample recipes out there, it's a pseudograin (seed), a complete protein, that's kind of like couscous but is a good replacement for rice. High in iron.

    hempseed, flaxseed and chia seed....
also complete proteins. I mix them in my smoothies w/ chocolate almond milk and a banana.... yum.

    Buckwheat....
I have yet to try this in grain form but I use soba noodles (a combo of regular and buckwheat) for my stir fries. Just tried an awesome recipe from the Post Punk Kitchen blog

    Edamame...
these are soybeans. I think they're yummy steamed w/ salt. They're easy to make, and that's the name of my game.

Nuts. I love almond butter, peanut butter and trail mix. Higher in fat, so use sparingly (and enjoy every last bit). Toast some Ezekiel sprouted grain bread and top w/ almond butter and you got a yummy 6g protein snack.

    Amarinth...
    also a complete protein, pseudograin

    Nutritional Yeast Flakes....
These have all essential amino acids. They are vegetarian flakes that don't taste like Baker's yeast but actually have a cheesy flavor. They're good on top of kale chips, or anything you might add Parmesan cheese to such as pesto sauce, marinara sauce, and even chili. You can find them cheapest at the Vitamin Shoppe. They're high in protein, low in fat and relatively low cal.

Beans, lentils, other legumes, wild rice, PB, some soy...stay away from the processed and GMO stuff if you can.

I have used Morning Star, Boca, Quorn, and other 'meatless' entrees in the past. They are okay...eat them occasionally.

While you say you don't like those types of meats...have you tried them prepared/cooked in different ways?

I'm a pescetarian and was a vegan for 4 years and a vegetarian for 22...only in the last two years have I started eating seafood.

Look up www.vegweb.com for some more ideas.
  • Protein shakes CAN be real food, FYI. I make shakes that have greek yogurt, cottage cheese, milk, berries...

Quick question....have you kept trying these foods? It takes time to adjust your tastebuds. I hated some of the foods I now adore when I was younger...and by younger I mean 3-4 years ago. Just keep trying them.

If you'd try it, you'd never even know that the greek yogurt and cottage cheese are in there. That's what makes it so amazing. They just taste like milkshakes. However, it takes actually having an open mind.

Costcos has the BEST black bean burgers!! I usually bake a few at a time so I can just reheat for a quick lunch. How about light string cheese?? I like the generic best. Good luck!

I do keep trying :) Smells are a big thing for me, as someone who battled an ED..trying new stuff is all a part of fighting to beat it. Like eggs and tuna, the smells are too strong..lunch meat is a texture, but I'm willing to try new stuff.. :)

I can attest to Angel79202 trying all kinds of foods. She tries more than me and I eat almost everything. Some people are like that. If you told me that olives would save my life then you would have to kill me first before you got it in my mouth! Especially black olives!!!! So I can understand how some people don't like certain foods.

I hope I didn't come off as rude...sorry if I did. It took me a long time to develop a decent palate. I'm a former ana/mia so I know what it's like adapting to new flavors, smells, textures. As long as she keeps trying...that's all that matters.

Never understood how a protein shake is not a real food. It has to be digested and processed the same way and has the same calories. Drink up!
