Running Question

Options
I started running a few months ago but gave up and would like to get back into it. The problem is when i run my shins ache
really bad. Is this due to my unfit state and it will get better? Or am i not cut out for running. I have expensive running shoes hoping that would cure the problem. Your thoughts please!!!!!

shin splints which are a pain in the butt its usually caused by over exercising and running on a hard surface .I have special insoles in my trainers and defiantly have a gait test done so you know you have the right trainers and just go steady dont push it.

You have shin splints. I had them too many years ago. This is going to sound crazy. I took several advils a day and ran harder. Eventually they healed. I don't recommend this. I am guessing that my body put priority to healing what was neeede the most.

Did you have your running shoes fitted properly?

It could be that you have the wrong type for your particular gait and it may be worth getting analysed at a specialist running store just to make sure.

It could very well be that you`re not used to running and in that case some stretches would certainly help. I find the one that works for me is to kneel down and lean back on your legs, hold for 30 seconds. Repeat this 2 -3 times every day.

Some get results from holding your leg straight in front of you while sitting and tracing the alphabet in the air with your toes.

    Good luck

I get shin pain too - I manage mine by using gel insoles, and also by stretching before and after running. Kneel down and sit on your heels to stretch your shin muscles. increase the stretch by leaning back slightly. Good luck!

That is probably a good idea. When you are able to run again take it easy. Perhaps follow the c25k programme and don't run on consecutive days. If you are prone to shin splints you may want to repeat some of the later weeks of c25k to avoid getting them again. The other option is to join a running club (once your shinsplints are healed) and get one of the coaches to watch you running. There may be something in your foot strike or gait that is causing it. Good luck with it:smile:

Yes I'd go to a doctor because any injury caused by exercise is likely to get worse if you continue that exercise without something changing. It could be you need different running shoes, or you could benefit from orthotic insoles, but your doctor can refer you to the right department. It's no fun being beset by injuries and this is why I gave up running previously, it was heartbreaking to have got fit enough to run longer distances but have to stop because of a hip problem.
