I'm thinking I want to try doing a juice fast but I have no idea how to start.

Does anyone have any suggestions as far as a good book to point me in the right direction as well as what kind of juicer to look into buying.

  • I would just caution you to be very careful. Research your fast very thoroughly (as obviously you're trying.) I was not prepared for the pancreatic strain when I did a juice fast. Also, I learned that I am a little anemic. Oh, also, try to cut out ALL refined sugars, breads, coffee (if you drink it) and fats as the starting of your fast approaches. It will be less of a shock on your system if you do. I was also unprepared for the cost of my ingredients (3 day fast was like $100)
Personally, I embarked on a juice fast and I was very sick at the end of the first day. I have a friend who does a juice fast maybe once per year and swears by them (she's the healthiest person I know). Just make sure you've got the time off to do it, you drink a LOT of water and try to listen carefully to your body.
    Good luck and happy juicing!

I love juice fasts. I usually do a 3 day fast once a year. The key is to prepare- as the user below mentioned. Depending on your current diet- you may even need to prepare to change your lifestyle for 2 weeks before and after the fast. You should be at optimal health (for you) before you start. No meat, dairy, caffeine, alcohol, etc... for a week before and after the fast. I have the Jack Lalane juicer and it ws like $80. Even doing a one day juice fast is nice- maybe a good way to see if you like it.

    Some Tips:

I make a Pottasium Broth (just basically fresh veggies and herbs, just google it). I drink it throughout the fast for energy and sometimes it is nice to sip something warm. I also add coconut water and herbal tea to the fast.

I usually drink Apple/Ginger/Carrot/Beet juice three times a day when on the fast. If I go to a juice store i get something different but I usually stick to that juice.

Remember you may need a mild laxative since you are not getting fiber. I recommend Yogi Smooth Move too. It is very gentle. Make sure you drink at least 8 glasses in addition to the juice and don't exercise on the fast. Take the time to relax and read, etc...

My favorite thing about a juice fast is it retrains you. You won't even be hungry but the mental part of eating is missed. It is weird and if you come off the fast correctly (not binge but eat like an apple or something) you will see that the fast not only made you drop a few pounds (yeah!) but really changed your relationship with food. Good Luck!!!

One site that I have come across in the past seems to have a lot of great info regarding fasts.
