NOT looking for advice, just sharing the experience.
Over the winter seasonal depression struck me at the tail end of it and I went back to old habits.
I put on, literally, 1lb per day and skyrocketed 60lbs of fat (plus muscle loss) in just two months.
Absolutely insane that it's even possible. I had to buy new clothes. I was up 3 pants sizes and 3 shirt sizes going from 36" pants to 42" pants, and a comfortable L shirt to XXL shirts.
Back on the right path again now for a few months, and it still comes off at a normal rate of 1.5ish lbs per week with a big calorie deficit. 2 or so months now and I'm down close to a size 40" pant and size XL shirt. Goes on quick, comes off slow.
Just kinda mind blowing to me, so thought I'd share. If you ever see yourself going back to old habits, stop yourself!

I believe that for those of us who have been obese, our fat cells are like uninflated balloons just waiting for any opportunity to reinflate. We seem to gain at a MUCH faster rate than a 'normal' weight person eating the same amount.
Like you, I am back on track now and after a quick initial drop, I am back to slow and steady weight loss.
Lesson learned!

So annoying. Why is it so easy to gain and so hard to lose???5
-
WOW! Where do I begin...so, over the past 6-8 months my eating and weight gain has been severe. Now, as the summer months are upon me, I'm struggling to remain present and involved in activities and outings with friends and family despite my insecurity and frustration with where I have allowed myself to get to! That's brutal. I'm really sorry for whatever happen to cause this. I hope you're in a good place to move forward now.4

I've dealt with this a lot. When I get fat (it happens more often than I'd like) I get pretty ashamed of myself, so I feel embarassed to go to the gym or my fitness classes.
But something that helps is to remember: No one cares! We are the only ones who care! sounds strange but its true. We fight these battles so hard that they become the world to us, but the strangers around us... literally don't care, they don't give it a single thought. Even the people who know us might care, but probably don't think anything negative.
It's hard, but for sure, the only way to fix it, is to "do something" and take those first steps again. I completely understand how you feel. I usually start by doing exercise and diet at home until I'm feeling more confident.

Agreed lol. This is the hands down fastest I've ever gained weight in my life. 60lbs in two months. I was working from home wearing sweat pants..... then suddenly I didn't recognize myself in the mirror and my clothes didn't fit. I literally lost *everything* I worked so hard at in a blink of an eye.
Winter is rough for me. The winters I survive the seasonal depression I'm usually ripped for the summer, otherwise this is a cycle I fight every year. I've considered moving south to where days are longer. I might really have to.

Do you have a good therapist to help you manage the SAD?
I can't imagine the stress of going through that every year. That sounds completely unmanageable.2 -
I feel like I’m just coming out of my winter blues and it effing sucks. Every year….
When I put my weight back on, I saw it coming and just full steamed into it. We are with you!!!! I hope this month is positive. And I wish you no plateau! 🙏🏼 ❤️2 -
I really appreciate your post and also many of the comments. I lost over twenty lbs during lockdown, I was so proud of my fitness level and how I was doing. I was using MFP and tracking everything and vigorous and disciplined about my exercise. Then, I don't know what happened, I just quit using tracking devices and thought I could wing it. I got depressed over the winter months and then had a major surgery which didn't allow me to exercise for several weeks afterward. I knew I was gaining weight but didn't check the scales;I was afraid to. Anyway, a couple of days ago I did weigh myself and was mortified to see I'd gained back the 20 lbs and 10 more! After crying for awhile I got back on track. It helps to read the comment that some of us who have been obese in the past put weight back on easier than others. I gained back the weight over a period of 16 months. I worked so hard to lose it and now I feel like I am at square one again. It helps to know there are others in the same boat!7

I guess it's possible to eat an extra 3,500 calories per day; the only way to get a deficit of 3,500 per day would be to eat very little to nothing and work out most of the day. Both seem equally difficult to me.0

I could absolutely, easily, add 3,500 calories a day to my diet if I stopped giving a crap. My sedentary TDEE at my current weight and height is about `1400 calories. My energy expenditure with my current activity level is about 2500. Just stopping exercising throws an extra 1000 calorie surplus in there. I could EASILY get the other 1500 with a pint of good quality ice cream (1000-1200) and an extra peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Could do it by subbing my current food selections for fast food, too (think 1200-1500 calories per meal) if I was depressed and having a hard time with meal prep/shopping or any level of emotional eating.
It isn't hard.
That's the problem.12 -
I've gained 9lbs this year.
It doesn't sound like a lot to some - but for me it's months of hard work down the drain.
I have changed my medication and have been a lot more sedentary over the last couple of months and my hunger is at a 10.
It's a 4 day weekend in the UK for the Queens Jubilee - basically an excuse to drink and eat.
So I'm starting again on Monday 🙄6
