Beginner in the gym

Hi! I am not new to dieting but I am new to the gym. I wondering if there is any advice on how to get started. I always feel so intimidated when I walk in and don't feel comfortable but feel like this is what is needed in order to keep continuing. I've lost a total of 25 pounds just by eating better, but I now need to tone things up a bit. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

    Hi Heather

I only started going to the gym about 4 years ago so am by no means an expert. However, based on my own experience…

I would advise finding a smallish local gym where you can try doing some classes in small groups. If your budget allows it might be worth having some PT sessions to quickly get you on the right track with the correct types of exercise to help you achieve your goals.

I joined a functional fitness gym which attracts a wide range or people of all ages and fitness levels. The workouts generally include a mixture of free weight training and cardio and can be scaled to your ability.

Do you have any friends who go to the gym that you could tag along with?

Many gyms offer one or free sessions with a trainer when you join, so if that's an option, you might want to take advantage of that.

If not, check whether there are any small group classes that incorporate things you're interested in, whether that be free weights, body weight exercises, aerobic activity, plates, etc.

Beyond that, there are books and videos and apps. If you could narrow down a bit what you want to do in the gym or what your goals are, people in the fitness forum (or any MFP forum really, but that one is focused on these questions) can probably offer advice.
