I volunteered at the SPCA every day for like, 8 months while I was an unemployed bum. It is what launched me into vet nursing. I still go from time to time, but I start work or course early nowadays.

yes, I go to a nursing home and my 2 dogs perform "pet therapy" 1x / month and also go to local library for a "reading w/rover" program for kids to read to dogs 1x/month. Lots of fun. I do a little volunteering w/ my church at our food pantry and kids area- but can't do much committing beyond this due to work and other things. I hope you get a lot of responses to this post- volunteering is so important and valuable to our society!

I volunteer once a week at a crisis line, been doing that for a few years now and it's so rewarding. It's crazy when I think about how much we've grown since I've been there, when I started it was only for the city and open noon until 8pm. Now we're province-wide, 24hrs and even have a 1-800 number! Then last year I started volunteering at a temporary winter homeless shelter and plan on doing that again this winter.

I just started volunteering recently at http://www.826valencia.org. They do a bunch of stuff, all related to academics -- especially writing. I have helped with their after school tutoring program and I've also gone to a high school to help students with their college admissions applications.

I'll be quite honestly, I get just as much out of it, if not more, than the students do. I love helping people with school and, especially, writing. So, it is a fantastic fit.

Now if I could just finish this darn dissertation, I could do some more volunteering!
  • I volunteer at church in logistics for PreK. I love my prek people. It's like a mini counselling session every Sunday, always ending up in prayer and a push to lean on God. I love it! I used to volunteer a lot more, but since my son started Kindergarten, it makes it a lot more difficult. I have fed the disadvantaged in Dallas. That was a good experience and I need to do that some more. I occasionally cook for the volunteer ground crew at church as well.

I'm actually quite excited that I can start getting my son involved in more volunteering with me as he gets older! I want him to have a volunteer spirit (but still know when to say no or when to back off so that his studies don't suffer because of it).

I was on the volunteer fire dept here as EMS, then when I got my pay job as an EMT on the Indian Reservation just north of us, I had to stop that. Conflict of interests.

Now my volunteer time is mostly taken up by hockey. I try to make sure that the jobs are done that the other parents don't like to do. I served for 3 years on the board of directors. There is an opening and I am being urged to fill it for the remainder of the year. This is my last year with the league as this will be my daughters last year as a Bantam and she will be going onto the high schools team next year. So I'd only be able to sit on the board for a few months. I'm really waffling.

I want to go back to helping kids read, I really loved that when I was a "room mom" when my youngest was in first grade. I'm happy to report I took a little boy who absolutely hated it to being a rabid reader to this day. He's always asking me what books I'm reading and what's good. And another little boy who had fallen through the cracks up to first grade level. That really made me feel good.

    Central Iowa trail association (CITA).

    About CITA

Central Iowa Trail Association is an Iowa not-for-profit corporation formed in 1996 in response to trail conflicts in Browns Woods in West Des Moines. We’ve worked since that time to educate Iowans on the value proposition of sustainable, shared singletrack.

We are an IMBA affiliate, and our central purpose is the world-class design, construction and maintenance of trails in partnership with city, county, state and private landowners. CITA also educates land managers and trail users through advocacy and outreach, including a chapter of the National Mountain Bike Patrol. And we also enjoy spending time on trails, so we host member and public events across the year.

Most importantly, CITA is volunteer-led; our capacity is defined largely by our board, members and volunteers – individuals and organizations who want to create quality outdoor experiences and, especially, value singletrack.

I volunteer at a children's hospice on Sundays and I also help them with special events several times a year, and take meeting minutes once a month. I've been doing it for 3 years, and I really enjoy it.
