Do you burn more calories when you're more fit?

Sounds like a silly, obvious question...but I've noticed that I'm burning more, doing the same workouts. So, am I working harder as I get stronger? For some reason, I expected to see more burn when I was out of shape because I'd have to work harder. Maybe it's a chicken or the egg kinda thing... Thoughts?

You SHOULD have to do more to burn the same amount.

If you're increasing your intensity (speed, incline, resistance etc.) because you're more fit, then yes,

the more muscular you are, the more calories you require to maintain your weight... that's why it's usually a little easier for men to lose weight (they naturally have more muscle mass than women). it's also why most people suggest doing some type of strength training in addition to cardio.

As you build more muscle it gets easier to push yourself during a workout. Also, the more in shape you get, the more efficient your cardio system gets and the easier it becomes to push yourself (for me, I know this is happening when I get sweatier, but my face no longer gets really, really red during a workout). Also, I think I just get used to working out, it no longer feels like such a chore, and I know the benefits of pushing really hard, so I do.

I don't know if this is what you mean, but...
If 2 people are doing the same activity for the same length of time,
the heavier person will burn more calories than the other person.

    I beg to differ.

I always heard the same, the more you weigh, the more you'll burn.

You feed muscle...the more you have, usually the better metabolism. Fat is just stored ...well, fat. (energy)
