Ok so I started trying to go low carb and have been doing the induction phase of Atkins. The issue I'm having is that my boobs are really sore and my nipples are all hard. PLEASE NO BAWDY JOKES!!! I tried to Google this to see if it was normal, but I keep getting recipes for tender chicken breasts. Lol. Has this happened to any one else? I dont' know if I should be concerned or not. Help!

I would consult a doctor if you can. If not, go off the Atkins, try upping your green veggies and cutting back on meat protiens. If you knotice a difference then it could be the diet (Atkins) not agreeing with you. Your body might be telling you it doesn't like it. Good luck!

What's with the eating BBQ sauce during induction? Just those two portions you ate made up about half your carb intake yesterday and pushed you way over the typical induction level of 20 grams of carbs per day. Plus those BBQ carbs are likely all refined sugar which is not a recommended way to get your carbs. It is my opinion that even those small (12 grams) amounts of carbs can knock you out of ketosis because of the kind of carbs they are.

I don't have a clue about the tata question. You might do a search on a low carb forum like forum.lowcarber.org or www.livinlowcarbdiscussion.com. You could also create an account and ask the question there as there are a lot more low carb and Atkins dieters there than on mfp.

Atkins does not require more meat than the typical American diet already has and it also calls for several portions of green and other vegetables per day if it is done according to the Atkins guidelines.

After looking at the OP's diary again I can see clearly she isn't doing Atkins correctly. You should shoot for at least 65% or more of your calories coming from fat during induction, maybe 5% carbs, and the rest from protein. The numbers from yesterday are 18% carbs, 41% fat, and 41% protein. That is NOT CLOSE to what Atkins calls for. This is one reason Atkins gets a bad name--people say they are doing it but don't apparently have a clue as to how to do it correctly. I apologize if this comes off as mean; I'd really like the OP to succeed, but that is not likely to happen the way she's doing the diet now.

To the OP, go read the Atkins book (I'd recommend New Diet Revolution from 2003) and see if you can't adjust your diet accordingly.

I eat VLC too and I've never experienced that. If you are expecting your period soon, it might explain the sore boobs.

Yes I'm aware that bbq is not part of Atkins. It was leftover and with work and class that is what I had availabel for dinner. I'm not perfect I'm just starting out. Sheesh. I'm trying to get there. And I am not giving Atkins a bad name. I never said it didn't work nor would I when I know I'm haven't been full out. I've never had sore boobs eating bbq sauce so my question pertained to the fact that I am eating less carbs than usual and if that could cause my issue. And yes although I am over the induction carbs I have been trying to eat WAY less carbs than I normally do. I tried to Google, but all I came up with was low carb, tender chicken breast recipes. Lol. And you may not try to come off as mean, but obvisously you know you did or you wouldn't have put in the disclaimer. So in future I will read the Atkins book. Thank you for your recommendations and maybe since we are supposed to be supportive while offering advice you could learn how to offer contructive criticism? Thanks for all your help guys

I think my criticism was constructive. You claimed you were doing Atkins but clearly you aren't. If somebody made a post on starting a vegan diet and talked about the eggs and fish they were eating, it would be constructive to point out to them that they weren't actually eating vegan.

Anyway, here's my attempt at completely constructive suggestions.

Get an Atkins book and read it and understand it before starting the diet.
After reading decide if that diet will be a lifetime lifestyle commitment. It is a terrible diet if you are just looking to drop x number of pounds, then stop the diet when you've reached that goal because in all likelihood when you get off of it the weight will come back.
If you do decide to start Atkins after the above two steps, try to keep you net carbs under 20 grams for the induction period.
Get your net carbs (less fiber) from healthy vegetables as much as possible.
Keep your calories from fat at 65% or greater.
Try and eat unprocessed protein sources as much as possible to make up the remaining calories. Don't overeat protein.
Stay hydrated by drinking a lot of water, especially during induction.
Go to some low carb sites (forum.lowcarber.org and livinlowcarbdiscussion.com are good) and create an account to read and ask questions in their forums. There are better places than MFP to get information on low carb dieting although the Atkins Support Group thread here is decent.
Personally I take daily vitamin C, B complex, and multivitamin supplements but I've been doing that my whole life, well before I started low carb dieting.

Hi there, I'm wondering, have you significantly increased your caffeine intake? I had this problem and discovered it was related to the caffeine that I was drinking in excess. Just thought I'd throw this out there in case this might help you. As soon as I cut back, the pain went away. Good luck!

It sounds like in the absence of carbs that your body is going through hormone changes and such. It is quite normal for your monthly cycle to shift.

That can happen on any weight loss plan, not just low carb - but if you have any type of unknown hormone issues low carb will correct it for you in the absence of those processed carbs.

Sometimes you have to ignorore people, who want to nit pick. Who answer with words that have nothing to do with your question. Who are condescending and try to say its constructive criticism. Who are just plain annoying!! Hope you get your situation resolved!!!
