How do you stop constant hunger?

Hey guys, I am fairly new to mfp. I am trying hard not to eat junk food and count my calories. I often go over because I am always hungry. I am hungry between lunch and dinner and starving after dinner, but I eat enough food. What do you guys eat as a snack to leave you less hungry?

Try a small portion of nuts or a tablespoon of peanut butter on an apply. Nuts have a lot of calories, but they are very satiating. Protein should help you feel "full" longer.0

I really have to focus on protein and fat. Especially the fat actually. Perhaps that's just me? For example: if I eat a bowl of plain oatmeal with some skim milk and berries for breakfast that should be healthy right? Except about an hour later I'm starving. If I eat 2 eggs mashed up with a little mayo (just a bit) and mustard and a banana I'm fine for hours. For years fat scared me, even the cholesterol in eggs scared me but the more I learn about both nutrition and my own body the more I trust that the 2 hard boiled eggs aren't what lead to my obesity0

I've often heard that about nuts too and thought great news as I LOVE nuts but for me they are a trigger food - I can eat an entire huge canister. I lose all willpower around certain foods (pizza, chips, nuts) so I'm better to not even have them in the house. I can have a cookie or two and not go back for more but goodness if I have walnuts in the house or almonds - I'm like an addict with them!0

I am fairly new here as well and no expert. I don't use all of my calories on my three meals so I can have snack room. I plan and enter my food before I eat it to see what the damage is and then if it is too much, I delete it and try something else so I have calories left for snacks. As for snacks, Peaches (68 cal), Whole Fruit Strawberry Popsicles (70cal), Chocolate Pudding Snack Packs - you can get fat free, sugar free and others. My favorite is I freeze my bananas, cut it in chunks and put in the blender, add 4 pecan halves and a cup of milk - it is kind of like a banana milkshake with slivers of pecans. Anyway, you get the idea. Lots of times, other users put up recipes that are pretty good and low in calories. Good Luck!0

I see you have 8 pounds to lose, so do you have your weight loss goal set at .5 lb/week? If not, you should do that and it will up your calorie goal. Otherwise, I would say, without seeing your diary, that maybe you want to look at what you're eating and make sure it is focused on whole foods, not processed foods. That will generally let you eat more food since processed is filled with so many junk calories.0

I'd say to start having some protein shakes or some kind of shake. they are very filling0

I would suggest adding a little protein to your snacks and meals. e.g. Instead of a banana, make a banana smoothie (1 banana, 1 cup skim milk, 1 Tbsp cocoa powder, and 1 packet splenda or stevia: 205 calories!) or an egg with your toast, or a cheese stick with your apple.
Other snacks that are pretty filling: ultra slim fasts (I use the walmart brand called "ultra weight loss shake"), 94% fat free popcorn (the Target brand is only 210 calories for the whole bag), and a sliced up cucumber. That's just a couple of ideas. Good luck!!!0 -
I also stay away from trigger foods (bad carbs) because it only leads me to eat more just to be eating it!!! My snacks include nuts and apples. I also drink a whole lot of water and love to sip on warm green tea0

Eat smaller meals and more of them. I have found that a good in between snack is the Oikos Greek yogurt. Stir it up good! I've never liked yogurt but that stuff is good and lots of protein to help the hunger. Fiber one bars and protein bars are good too. You will learn with this site. It has helped me so much. I haven't been on here 2 weeks yet but whoaaa has it helped. Can't wait to learn more.0

Eat more fat and protein.0 -
I eat 6 meals a day, 8 glasses of water and I am rarely hungry. You are welcome to look at my diary for ideas. Biggest secret for me is to plan my meals the night before and log them in. In the morning I allow enough time to pack everything I need. I make sure to eat all 6 meals close to the same time every day as much as possible. Good luck!:drinker:0

Are you eating enough? If you only have a bit to lose, you should probably not be set to "lose 2 pounds a week".
Also check your activity level and make sure you are entering your exercise too.
This will give you a more realistic calorie level.
Once you know you are eating a realistic amount, have a look at the kinds of foods you are eating. I find that some things (like stupid mini rice cakes!) just don't fill me up. I've just eaten 70 cals worth and it feels like there is nothing in my stomach. I know that 70 cals of almonds will be much more satisfying.
You will probably have to experiment to see what works for you, but as a starting point, try eating less processed snacks and more whole foods like eggs, fruit, veggies, nuts etc. You get much more nutritional value for your calories and you might find that they stick with you and fill you up a bit longer.0 -
Thanks everyone, you are all really helpful. I have been trying to eat more nuts and apples and pears. I have also been trying to eat less in my meals so that I have calories left for a snack later. I have tried one shake and found it not filling at all. I may try some other brands to see if they are better, or maybe the slimfast. My goal is set to .5 lbs a week so I should be allowing for enough calories.0

As others have said, protein and fat are key to satiety. Also, some things, like egg whites, are really low calorie even though they fill you up decently. Could make an egg white omelette with green veggies and onions for a large punch for few calories. Also, snacking on raw veggies help keeps me full! And eating exercise calories0
