Lana, I used to feel the same way. I thought pain immobilized me til I understood that immobility immobilized me.
It was the immobility that let the pain take control.
I think many others here will tell you they’ve had the same experience.
Losing weight alone helped diminish my pain and discomfort immediately. Less stress on joints, less pressure on feet, even the GERD packed up and left.
You don’t have to exercise to lose weight. “Weight loss is made in the kitchen” was one of the first things I learned here. Exercise is for health, and possibly to “buy back a few calories.
But health includes both physical and mental. Just getting up and doing something, having an “I need to do this” thing to do every day versus being by at loose ends, getting out and hearing birds, working up a bit of a sweat, it all did wonders for my state of mind.
Stress, depression, boredom contributed to what I perceived as pain.
I still have some pain. Not the dull aching always there. Pains I know where they’re coming from and that I can get rid of them if I choose to rest. Controllable pain.
Exercise doesn’t have to be elaborate. Walking is the easiest, cheapest, single best thing you can do for yourself. If you want to branch out into other things you enjoy-as I did- that’s awesome, but start somewhere.
No one can live and treat you as you deserve as you can yourself. Change isn’t going to happen “to” you, you have to start the change to happen.1 -
Well put @springlering62 !! I couldn’t agree more. I used to think it would be great if I could lose weight and not exercise. I hated exercise!! And, while I did lose weight, it came right back on because I missed one huge important step…. you have to totally change your life, your mindset. You actually have to retrain your brain so you can have the sustainable, life-long success you’re searching for. Plus, after absolutely FORCING myself to get on that treadmill for any real length of time, I realized that after about only 2 days of that… I found that I actually liked it. A LOT. I actually look forward to getting on that treadmill. Trust me, this is something I never expected to happen. But I am so glad I forced myself to do it at least twice. Now, I have way more energy and am always doing something. Plus, added bonus, I’m a severe insomniac, only getting about 2 hours of sleep a night, and exercise is something that stays with me all day, giving me the energy to stay alert. My job performance has improved, my marriage has improved, my whole outlook on life has improved. Please just try it for a couple of days…. I promise you that you will be amazed at all the positives that come out of it!!2
