running tips??

I ran when i was in high school as a stress reliever, and at 31 my 12 yr old wanted to run for his (bb & fb) to stay in shape. we live in the country and i wouldn't let him run alone so i had to go with. i found myself running 7 days a week up to 3 miles, even when my kids didnt go or they were at their dads. i'm not a fast runner i try to keep a steady pace i usually go between 12 - 15 min mile depending on the day, when my nephew comes with me he picks on me cause he is faster but he often has to stop and walk so i feel i get the last laugh. in may of 08 my dr told me my L-3 was bulging but he never told me to stop running (i got a cortizone shot) and in dec 08 i had a hystorectomy(?) and just started back and have in 2 short weeks have made it to 2 miles a day, i was wondering if anyone had any ideas to make my short runs burn more calories and anything i can do on below zero days indoors ( i hate gyms) to keep me from getting out of shape. i can not run in the cold ( 20 degrees or so and under) it makes my lungs burn when i breath. tread mills are boring and i find reasons not to run i have an easier time outside i can push myself even when i do not want to run by picking out landmarks and saying ok run to the sign and then ill be like well i thing i can go to that tree and before i can talk myself out of it i'm at the spot where i turn aruond to go home. well i've ran on long enough:happy:

Find some hills!
Or, sprint in short bursts, then back to 'rest pace'.
Carry a backpack with some extra weight.
If you've got some stairs inside, do laps with the backpack. I like to carry 10 pound hand weights, then do upper body sets on the landings.0 -
I have found a show I love watching daily, and have made a habit of watching that show while I run on the treadmill. It started off with jogging a mile, and then walking a lap...repeating until the show ended. Now, I find myself running at a good pace throughout the show. It's at least an idea for the freezing days. Anytime fitness is the gym I use that has televisions for each individual treadmill, and you can just plug in your headphones and go. Some also will show terrain passing by on the screen as you run and the treadmill will steepen and decline as you go up and down hills. To make a shorter run burn more calories, maybe take an ipod with a playlist of songs that have a good beat, and try to get yourself used to running at a faster pace. You'd be shocked how many more calories you'll burn by running the same amount of time just a little bit faster.0
