digestive enzymes daily...
Someone recently suggested I take these on an empty stomach to dissolve a small cyst in my leg. I haven't done any research on them yet. What are your thoughts?

That's beyond my expertise. If it was me I would see a dermatologist. I believe in a good balance of alternative medicine and traditional medicine. I do a lot of research on meds, I figure the longer a med has been around, the safer it probably is. Nutrition is one area I don't listen to M.D.s on. They get about a week of nutrition training, I've read it many places and heard it first hand from an M.D. I hope this helps, thanks for posting on the thread:)

I agree with you on MD and nutrition.
I recently had a discussion with my doctor on calcium.
I said broccoli has calcium.
he says no
I said soy has calcium
He says no.
Uh, went home and looked it up for certain. Yes doctor they do. I just probably don't eat enough for what I need.
I found a supplement AlgaeCal Plus. plant sourced calcium. Algae in the ocean I believe. Has calcium and magnesium and 73 trace minerals with vitamins D3 and K2 added.
I'm not sure how to evaluate whether it is working or not. I'll take it for now.0 -

Pre-run meal/breakfast:
Oatmeal w/ 1 tbsp. maple syrup
Goodbelly probiotic drink
1 Clif Shot electrolyte gel
Lunch:
Bowl of brown rice with Bragg's liquid aminos (healthy alternative to soy sauce)
Cup of refried beans
Mid afternoon snack:

I've been doing my research on soy, and from I have heard and read, I'm not getting an excess amount of the stuff so I'm not going to dwell on it. Soy products are a great meat replacer for me, but I limit that to one serving a day.
On the whole "eye rolling" thing, I mostly find that people just don't understand. I work at a Mexican restaurant and I closed last night. The other server with me wanted to split something for dinner, and I told him I was a vegan so we'd have to choose wisely. He suggested brisket nachos. I said no Eli, I'm a vegan, I don't eat that. So he said, oh ok, we'll get Blue Goose quesadillas and have them do half with no chicken. I said no silly, I'm a vegan. He seemed baffled, suggested enchiladas, to which I again had to turn down. We didn't split dinner, and I don't think he ever grasped why I wasn't eating cheese.
My boyfriends dad tried to give me deer jerky after I told him I was a vegan now. He said it was low in fat- which is true, but I reminded him that its high in deer meat, and deer are animals. LOL Its just a foreign concept to some people I guess.0 -
I choose not to use honey. For one it is higher on the glycemic index than table sugar and I've heard that the harvesting of honey is pretty inhumane. I'm sure you can probably find more on the internet. Raw agave nectar is a good alternative to honey. Again, good luck eating raw, let me know if you feel better on a raw diet.
Unfortunately there is no agave nectar where I live (Bulgaria)... Of all the sugars/glucose/fructose offered here honey is the best option as it's all natural product... I have some homemade honey and bought different kinds from a local bee-keeper, I wouldn't buy from a regular store as they are usually not natural honey... When I was younger I had to go to my father's village very often and had to assist by the killing of animals many times (had to help my grandfather wash it and such), which is probably why I quit eating meat so early... One day you hug the little lambs, then you can't really eat them... On the other hand, I have also assisted by collecting the honey and it has not had this effect on me... It doesn't kill the bees and we would always leave part of the honey so they have food for the winter... Actually it didn't even occur my mind before that honey is an animal product... I now frequent a Bulgarian vegan raw foodism blog and the author is really into it, she explains so fine about all the benefits and go me decided to follow her lifestyle... so she prepares all food herself, won't even buy the ready raw nut milks to be sure everything is raw and didn't come from animals... On the other hand, she has so many articles about the benefits of bee products and I started eating them exactly because of reading her comments... It wasn't before someone left a comment about it that I realized bees are actually animals... I have been a bit confused since... It's not like eggs or milk that comes from inside the hen/cow, it's rather pollen from blossom bees collect and they use their saliva to stick it together as far as I know... I don't really have a sweet tooth, so I can do pretty well without sweeteners of any kind... I was trying to get a teaspoon of honey in the morning just because she had recommended it... :ohwell:
I still haven't found seaweed to add to my menu, they didn't have it at the healthshops and the healthy food departments of the big stores, which is where I found most of the things... Finally found me quinoa today that you also say you like, looks just like millet but not as popular. Any suggestions what to 'cook' with it without cooking it? The blog girl recommends it too but there are no recipes other than sprouts and one recipe for a vegan sushi that I still have to find me nori for...0 -

At this point I don't have an opinion on the bee or honey thing one way or another :indifferent: I just like maple syrup. Yea, it can be expensive. Since I've been on this site I've cut back on it and only use a teaspoon in my oatmeal in the morning. It's lasting longer that's for sure.
I get mine at Kroger grocery store by the other syrup's if someday your interested. or not, I don't want to come off pushy. just trying to help0 -
mego, i know it is sick, but i can't help laughing about the deer jerky and your comments....low in fat but high in deer meat...i guess we have to laugh sometimes to keep our sanity...i remember once my mom invited me to dinner when they were having rock shrimp...i said thanks but no thanks mom because remember i am very allergic to shellfish and besides i am a vegetarian and don't eat it anyway...so, she said, well can you come cook it for us?..you gotta love your families...and your boyfriend's family!!!...thank you for giving me a good laugh even though you weren't trying to be funny...blessings to all...this is a great thread...0

I'm really interested in this and have been doing
some research, trying to make the change. So,
what would a day be like for you as far as menus go?
I mean, breakfast, lunch and dinner?
I bought a steamer and love vegetables anyway.
I'm concerned about getting complete protein
and having variety when traveling or just eating for one,
which is what I usually do.

Getting the full level of all amino acids (building blocks of proteins) is easier than once thought in a vegan diet. It was once thought that you had to combine foods at the same meal, i.e. beans and rice to get complete protein. Unfortunately this myth persists even though it was proven otherwise in the 80s.
Truth is it is hard to not get the daily amount of complete recommended protein on a vegan diet. I eat soy, nuts and legumes (mostly refried beans) to complement the proteins I get from grains.
This is what I eat in a typical day, keep in mind I don't like to cook so I usually keep things simple and easy:
Breakfast:
Bowl of oatmeal w/tbsp maple syrup
Goodbelly probiotic drink
Handful of almonds
Lunch:
Bean tacos w/rice OR
gardenburger bean patty on Ezekiel bread w/ Vegenaise(vegan mayonnaise usually only found at health food stores) OR
Amy's frozen dinner (usually black bean tamale dinner or black bean enchilada dinner)
Afternoon snack:
Ezekiel bread (freezer section) w/vegan margarine
Dinner:
Whole grain pasta w/marina sauce OR
Rice w/broccoli (super easy meal cooked with rice cooker) OR
Gardensteak w/ steamed vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini)
Throughout the day I'll usually have about 2 bananas an orange and a bowl of blueberries and lots of water
Supplements: tbsp. of chlorophyll for very mild cleansing, vegan omega 3 pill, vitamin E pill (recommended to take with omega 3 supplements)
You are right that vegans don't consume eggs, dairy or fish.
For health reasons it is my opinion that dairy and eggs would be the thing to limit or give up completely. I have snored like a buzz saw my whole life and within a week of becoming vegan my snoring almost went away completely. My stomach was also very greatful. Doing research on this I think dairy had a lot to do with it. Many people have minor allergies to dairy and I think I was definitely one of them.
Dairy and eggs are very profitable commodities and are therefore marketed very strongly, that is why I think so many people think they are so healthy.
I think fish is far more healthy than dairy or eggs as long as you go with fish that is low in mercury and other contaminants.

I was never much of a meat eater, but after reading Fast Food Nation that just took me over the edge.
The main thing going veg has done for me is that I am aware of what is going into my body and how my body reacts to certain food.0 -

Because of my schedule (its crazy- last semester of college, doing an internship, and waiting tables) I don't really eat the 3 squar meals, but I try to make sure I am eating every 2 to 3 hours and eat around 250 calories at a time. This is what my today is going to look like:
Granny smith apple, Navel Orange, Banana, coffee w/ light vanilla silk and stevia (I ate the fruit over a 2 hour period, the apple after my run, orange while i got ready, and banana while driving to internship)
2 slices of amy's soy cheese pizza for lunch part 1
Lettuce wraps- Big lettuce leaves wrapping sliced carrots, tomatoes, onions, raddishes, garlic and salsa for Lunch part 2 (I'll have this around 3:30 when I get home from my internship before I go to work)
100 calories pack of pretzles & guacamole during work (Mexican restaurant)
Luna Bar-Lemon Zest when I get home
Big glass of Light Vanilla silk before bed
For tomorrow its gonna be:
Breakfast- Regular oatmeal w/ ground flax seed while getting ready & banana while driving
Lunch 1- 2 Slices soy cheese pizza
Lunch 2- Spinache sauteed with bell peppers and topped with grapefruit slices
Shift snack- pico de gallo, mushrooms, and jalapenos wrapped in a corn tortilla
After work snack- gala apple, 100 calorie pop corn0 -

Hey, thanks for keeping it going purrr. I have been busy running a lot and looking for a full-time job, I just finished my first marathon on April 11th.
There's a new book out called the Engine 2 diet. It's written by a fire fighter here in Austin. I'm trying to catch it when its not checked out at my library. It's about $25. Skinny *kitten* has also been released but my local Barnes and Noble has not received it yet. If there are any other books you recommend let me know. I'm trying to eat healthier. it was educated who bumped first, i just caught it as soon as she did it... i see she has also reached her weight goal, wtg! :flowerforyou: i am positive i will meet mine one day, although it will take longer for obvious reasons... it'll be 3 months tomorrow since i changed my lifestyle, it doesn't feel like a sacrifice or anything, it's just the way i am and i wonder why i wasn't like this before :ohwell:

Good one, doc! :laugh: You know, actually studies (several of them) have shown that calcium depletion occurs when one consumes too much dietary (specifically animal) protein. Also, countries who consume more milk products have a higher rate of osteoporosis. Go figure!

But I have been trying to get my dad to read the E2 Diet. We come from a family of brisket, sausage, and steaks. We're Czech! I've been suggesting it to him constantly, but I think I might actually just *buy* the book myself and have it mailed directly to him.
And I might get Skinny *kitten* for my brother! He's so opposed to vegetarian or vegan, but I think it's mostly because it started with his littlest sister, and now his other sister and his mother are going vegan, and it's like caving in all around him. But he is interested in being healthy-*looking*, so maybe if someone *else* tells him (the Skinny B's, as my mother and I call them when around her little ones), he'll at least understand me, and stop bothering me and telling me I'm not getting enough protein and that God made animals for us to eat. (Actually he didn't, read Gen 1:28-30, and Isaiah 11:6-9- he calls us to "lead them"- as an owner leads a dog, a horse- a beloved friend and companion. The Bible often uses children to illustrate how we are supposed to be)

Did you know that on the Standard American Diet (SAD- hahah!), men get an average of 175% too much protein and women 144%?? Crazy huh?0 -

Hi all! I've been following this thread and am now, finally, saying hello! I've been vegan for about 6 months and I'm loving it. It is difficult at times because my family is Italian and uses a lot of cheese- so naturally, I've been cooking a lot of my own food lately! But anyways so far so good! I feel clean- its such a great feeling!0 -

I am so with you. I was quite the carnivore. I could seriously put it away. I raised goats and sold them for slaughter in FFA, I ate steaks regularly, I lived in TEXAS... I mean, I was the T-Rex of meat-eaters. Then one day I thought, now wait just a darn minute... I've got some inconsistencies in my life. I love animals, but I obviously don't love ALL animals, if I can choose which ones to pet and which ones to eat. So I went vegetarian.
I missed bacon for the longest time, but now it grosses me out. It's greasy and dead! And then when I went vegan, I missed cheese. But then about 6 months into it, someone gave me a tiny bit of really high quality gouda or something, and it was so freaking salty and cheesy it was gross! So don't worry, you'll get there :happy: Your tastes adjust to appreciate more complex flavors than charred, salty, greasy meat.0 -

For yogurt, I would try Trader Joe's soy yogurt (If you have a TJ's), or Silk brand soy yogurt. I know both of those are vegan. However, there are other soy yogurts that are NOT vegan. That's where obsessively reading ingredients comes in A lot of times it will say in parenthesis after a lacto-sounding ingredient "from vegetable source," and most vegan brand things are very proud of their vegan-ness, and will say big and bold VEGAN on the back (or front). You just have to read.
As for cheese, there are a couple "cheeses" I use (rarely, because, like cheese, they are high fat and just not that great for ya). One melts, one doesn't. Honestly, you just have to find what suits your taste buds. Beware when scouring the fake cheese section, however. There are several imposters that use casein, lactic acid, and are definitely not vegan. The ones that are though, are good about advertising it. Again, read the ingredients religiously.
Cream cheese- I don't know if you like cream cheese much, but I love it. Toffutti makes a fake cream cheese that I find delish. They also make a very convincing sour cream, too. My mother loves that- she makes Mexican food a lot, and also uses a dollop on soups, mixes spices in for dips, etc.
TIP: In general, if it says glycerin, natural flavors, lactic acid, mono- and diglycerides, and not "vegetable glycerin," etc, you can bet that it's not vegan. That's just in my experience. You can always call the manufacturer.0 -

Hehe, I'm from a hunting family, and I've slaughtered animals myself. I grew up on a farm where we used to raise sheep and goats. I personally have no issue with the farming industry or the meat industry because I've seen it first hand... that's why I tend to have a big grudge against books like Skinny *****, because I know for a fact that a lot of the content is flat out wrong, or completely outdated.
I have no illusions, I am basically a vegetarian of economy. For a long time all I bought was tofu because it was super cheap compared to meat, plus it kept better with my shoddy fridge. Then one day a few months later I tried eating meat... and it made me sick. For around 2 days. Since then, my taste for meat has plummetted. Its cheaper, and more comfortable for me to be a vegetarian. Plus most of my friends are vegetarians, as well as my girlfriend. Since I enjoy cooking for people, its just easier. Not to mention its easier for me to stick within my daily nutrition with a vegetarian diet.
I know I could build my tolerance back up for meat, but really right now there is just no reason to go back0
