To B-12 or not to B-12 ;)

Does anyone take B-12?? If yes, does it help? I have been super low on energy lately, so I thought I would give it a try, but I don't feel any better. Does it take a while to get the full benefits?

I've been taking the B-complex and it gives me energy throughout the day. In fact, when I stopped taking them to see if there was a difference, fatigue set in right around 1:30-2 in my workday. When I started taking them again, the lag stopped. Plus, it is water soluble and any extra will come out.

I just started taking it a week ago. I haven't noticed any changes yet... but I plan to give it month before deciding to continue or not.

  • I have been taking B-12 shots and have not noticed a whole lot of difference. I have been taking them for energy. I'm going to switch to the pills and see if that is better.

I get a B-12 shot once a month. It gives you more B-12 then if you took a daily vitamin and yes, your energy will pick up. I can tell the week that I'm due for my shot because I start to get tired easily and honestly in my case, I can sleep the day away if someone would let me, lol. I recommend it especially if you are feeling fatigued alot.

I do take an OTC B-12 supplement and I notice a BIG difference. I seldom eat meat, and after a round of blood work my Dr. diagnosed a deficiency. The prescription supplement was OUTRAGOUS in price, but the OTC one seems to be working just dandy, and the result was pretty immediate! Also, take a look and make sure you're getting enough iron in your diet, that can be a source of fatigue as well. Best of luck and hope you're feeling 100% in no time!
  • I just started taking B-12 as well. It has been 6 days and I do feel better but I also starting taking iron as well. I don't eat or like red meat including ham at all and haven't for 20 years. I get terrible migraines during my period so am also hoping this helps. So not sure if it's one or the both.

For some strange reason when I take B-12 or B-complex it raises my blood pressure and causes a headache. It did increase my energy but not worth the side effects .
  • You would laugh if you read my post! We must have responded at the same time. My B-12 just says B-150 On the bottle. What does the OTC stand for?

OTC is over the counter, i.e. not prescription

How much B12 is a good amount to be in a B-Complex vitamin? When I was looking at all the different kinds at the pharmacy, there was a wide range of mcg per pill.

I took b12 shots a long time ago and now i take the sublingual otc supplements instead. The shot gives your the energy quicker, the pill takes a while to build up and give you energy, but I can't stand shots.!

Most adults get enough vitamin B-12. However, people who don't eat any animal products generally need to take a vitamin B-12 supplement or eat foods fortified with vitamin B-12. If you are a vegetarian, but you drink plenty of milk, then you likely consume enough vitamin B-12. I have included a link to a fact sheet from the Office of Dietary Supplements, a subdivision of the U.S. National Institutes of Health. <http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/vitaminb12>.

I take the sub-lingual OTC supplements on doctor's orders due to a deficiency. Helps with energy.

This is pretty much what I was going to say. If you're a vegetarian you might have to increase your B-12 intake somehow. If you feel you may be deficient, ask your doctor for a Vitamin B blood test. Many people that take higher doses of a B-complex feel more energized, while others don't notice a difference.

Sub-lingual Vitamin B is supposed to be absorbed better than tablets. Some people however are not able to absorb Vitamin B no matter what, so they require shots. Again, when in doubt, ask your doctor for a test. Currently I take 100% of the daily allowance, but I've been toying with the idea of increasing it. Not sure about it yet.

Agree.... get tested by your doctor, expecially if you have been eating vegetarian for some time. If you are deficient in B12 then adding it in will help.
If you aren't deficient, I doubt that you will get lots of extra benefits
  • I would so recommend it. I am on B-12 and mult-vitamin. I also take fish oil. I can tell a huge difference when I use vitamins verses when I forget a dose. Goodluck
