Eating out

Ok - so I thought I made a pretty good choice today when I took someone out for their birthday lunch. Shrimp Cocktail, Salad with Balsamic Vinegrette. Didn't order garbage appetizers and was trying to be mindful of how much I ate (ate slowly and when I was full, I stopped).

However, when I got home and logged it, I was a bit surprised. The blue cheese crumbles (there wasn't much but holy crap!), the glazed walnuts (same with this) and the teeny tiny slice of grilled bread that I'm sure was drizzled with oil or something (bet it was butter...ugh).

Being that I HATE fish (unless it has a ton of tartar sauce on it), what do you order? I'm completely lost in a restaurant (unless it's a chain and the calories are posted on the menu here).

I TRY to plug in what Im going to eat BEFORE I go. I stick with resturants I know if I cant plan ahead of time. My husband is nice enough to let me look up food at the table on my phone. If all else fails get an ALL veggie salad no crutons or cheese and dressing on the side. Dip your fork in dressing then stab away. Then you can have dressing you want but use hardly any of it.

I don't eat out too often, so when I do I usually just get what I want. But when I am trying to be mindful I would usually order Chicken breast with steamed vegetables or a salad. If it comes with mashed potatoes or something I ask them to sub extra veg. Or soup is usually ok as long as it's not a cream based soup.

I made a blog about it. It's not too much about WHAT to eat, but how to prepare and what to do. Might help.

Something along the lines of grilled chicken & veggies. Or a salad w/ grilled chicken - no croutons, no cheese (depending), dressing on the side. Sometimes a bacon cheeseburger.

I know this sounds absolutely absurd and you may look absolutely ridiculous but what I do when I eat out is decide what I want then I enter it in on my phone (not sure if thats an option for you) and if it looks horrible in black and white I find something else. If it is something that IO can eat half of and eat half for dinner ot lunch another day I would do that!! Good luck next time!! Or if I know where I am going, I will look up the menu online and find nutritional info there and at least have an idea of what I will order without looking like a freak!

i eat whatever i want, if i go to restaurant since it's not an all the time thing for me i want to indulge a bit. 1 day of over indulgence isn't going to destroy your diet, get back on track the next day. no one should overly worry about going out to a restaurant with friends or family, a family gathering, party etc due to possibly over eating. to me personally that means you're not in control of diet but your diet is in control of you

Meat and vegies. Don't eat the chips! (fries in America)

There's usually a steak or chicken on the menu - just have that! The soup of the day, salad, pastas - just choose the healthiest option and don't eat at fast food restaurants.
  • You can always ask them not to put on certain items. My wife and I get large grilled chicken salads we have them hold the cheese, bacon, and crewtons(sp). Also get the dressing on the side and dip you fork in it then pick up the salad you get a little dressing in each bit and use a lot less dressing. You can do that at most places. On other items having them hold the bun, sauce, or cheese or getting it on the side so you can control what goes on can make a big difference.

I tend to order whatever takes my fancy, entree size, take away half by default (I bring my own container) and then a salad with dressing on the side to pad it out and fill me up. Logging in advance where possible is a great idea too.
