Best Way To Get Rid of a Charlie Horse?

Maybe I've been working out too much with no rest, but I feel like I have a huge knot in my calf muscle. What is the best way to get rid of it? It was so annoying last night while working out...jumping jacks were no fun with a cramping calf.

My neighbor is an Athletic Trainer and she made me drink 8 oz of pickle juice once. It worked but I don't think I would do it again. :sick:0

drink water..... most likely not hydrated enough0
-
eat a banana0

DH has the same problem and finds that drinking one bottle of lowcal gatorade a day keeps the cramps away. Dr said it might be a an electrolyte issue. Hope that helps.0

Massage the muscle. Drinking a tbsp of vinegar will help too.0
-
banana and rub it out0

Go buy yourself a foam roller. It will help with any stiff/sore muscles in the future. I use it after I run and stretch. It's like getting a massage to push out all the lactic acid.0

^^ yep.0 -
Charlie horses can also be a symptom of a calcium deficiency.0

Vitamin E works for me. I get the worst leg and foot cramps from working out. Happens the minute I hit the sack, but a doctor friend suggested taking vitamin E after working out and before bed and it seems to be doing the trick.0

Most likely it is due to either dehydration or lack of potassium (which is why people keep saying to eat a banana). Drink plenty of water or gatorade and eat plenty of fresh fruits to obtain the potassium.0

I had this discussion at work a few years ago.
My boss's wife said to flex your ankle so your toe points up. My coworker said to flex your ankle so your toe points down. I said hop around on one leg while swearing like a drunken sailor. They laughed at me, but then that study came out that says that cussing relieves pain, so I had the last laugh.

Joking aside, make sure you're getting enough potassium.0 -
I get these regularly. I'll either have 1 G2 after my workout or a glass of 1/2 pedialyte 1/2 water. I tried doing the banana thing, the milk thing, the LOADS of water thing...I needed to replenish my electrolytes. Haven't had any cramping problems since.0

Have you tried Craigslist?0

Lorina is right:

---on the first suggestion. I discovered this years ago and it always works and the result is instant.
Do keep your potassium in line first though.0 -
Give it to someone else! Walk up to them and knee their thigh. Its like electricity, the Pain goes from you to them.0

I get those, too. I actually had one yesterday while I was working out with my trainer. She told me it was probably due to overuse, and to take a rest day (which is hard for me, haha!) I've also noticed that my salt has been low the last few days, and since I've been running/sweating a lot, my electrolytes get low. I like PowerAde Zero, and try to drink one of those when that happens. Also, if you're going to be doing extensive workout/sweating, you may want to look into dissolvable electolyte tablets.0

I'll definitely try this one. :P
Thanks for the suggestions!0 -

The charlie horses I've had have been sudden and debilitating. The pain is O.M.G. I asked a woman once what giving birth felt like (I was young and stupid), and she said it was like an intense charlie horse. I was silent for a beat, then said, "OMG! That HURTS!" Yea....0

Well, that clinches it Qarol...I'm never having kids. :P
I'll see if upping my potassium intake (because it's been a little low the past few days) helps. I drink plenty of water since it's really the only think (other than coffee) I drink. And I might get some low/zero calorie electrolyte beverages.0 -
I used to get these from time to time, usually when I am in bed sleeping after a hard day. There is a split-second moment when you can feel it coming on and if you stretch out the muscle quickly you can avoid the cramp. For me, that is pointing my toes back towards me (to stretch the calf muscle). I haven't gotten a leg cramp in years by doing this, however, I do get up and take an Advil right away once this occurs. Now I remember to take Advil anytime I notice that I overdid it on my calf muscles. It seems to work to prevent cramping.
If you are too late and experience the cramping, then do what everyone else suggests with the bananas, water, rollers, massage, etc.0 -
Pangui is absolutely right. There's that split second that you feel it coming and instantly point your toe UP and lengthen the calf. It's immediately gone.0

tonic water has some quinine in it. quinine is prescribed for muscle cramps. if you drink a little for a while, especially an hour or so before bed, you'll be cramp-free.
adding gin is up to you0 -
Well, the saga continues. I thought it went away this weekend (I upped my water and potassium), but yesterday morning after a little jogging it was back with a vengence. I've tried massaging it and using natural Icy Hot, but to no avail. I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow to see if we can figure it out. My mom thinks it's DVT (but she's not a doctor and can be a little paranoid at times). So we'll see...0

I got these bad with both pregnancies (it's a pretty common pregnancy annoyance) - they would wake me up in the middle of the night. Best bet for preventing them is checking your diet - make sure you're getting enough calcium and potassium (started eating a lot more bananas LOL). For me it also helped to move more during the day, but obviously that's not the problem if you're working out regularly. ;-) Whenever I DID get one, the quickest and most effective way to get rid of it was to stretch my leg out straight and point my toes up toward my body and heel out, and massage the muscle at the same time. Stretches the muscle out and calms the cramp fairly quickly.0

Well, no blood clots or cysts were seen by the sonogram technician, which was a huge sigh of relief. The knot in my calf is slowly disappearing and walking around a lot isn't as painful. Every once in a while it will twinge, but it's not nearly as bad as before. I might try Level 1 of 30DS tonight (since I had been on Level 2) and use the KT Tape. If it works, I guess I'll be stopping at a sporting goods store on my way home from work tomorrow. (One of my runner co-workers gave me some to try since she had a similar injury to her calf a couple years ago and the KT Tape really helped.)
Thank goodness it was not a blood clot!0
