Working out too much?

I was told yesterday that working out too much can actually cause your belly to get bigger? I have been spending about 1.5 to 2 hours at the gym. I cut back a bit, I usually do about an hour to 1.5 hours cardio then I lift weights every other day for about 30 minutes. (Mainly upper body, as the cardio is forming the legs nicely) Just curious if anyone has heard that over working out can cause you not to lose belly fat. I did notice my belly is the slowest thing to shrink. It's only shrank about 2.5 inches why every other part of my body has shrank over 4 inches.

I do about 1.5 hours a day (that is cardio and weights included) and that is not a lot. Alot is what I used to do....4 hrs a day. It's called exercise bulimia.

As for the belly question, more than likley that is the last place you will lose. Is it typicall the first place you gain? People lose in different areas at different rates. I lost upper body fat first, then my stomach. My thighs and hips are the last to go. It's all dependent on your body.

This sounds silly. I suppose if you look at the extreme body builders, they are all fat and muscle.

    Are you lifting this much?

I agree with billsica. I think whoever told you that was making it up. Probably used that as their excuse to not exercise at all. ;)

Honestly, why do people need excuses not to exercise? Just say you don't want to and move on...

I believe (and I may be wrong here so don't flame me if I am) what you have heard is regarding extreme cardio.is that it increases cortisol which promotes belly fat. Now, at what level this happens I have no clue; but my guess is that you aren't close to that level.

Thanks for the responses, I'll keep doing the 1.5 cardio and 30 minutes weights. I just wanted to get another persons opinion on it as I had never heard that before.
