LESS Alcohol ~ JANUARY 2023 ~ One Day At A Time

Quiet day today with my son's family. Still under the weather and stayed AF.
1/1 AF
I haven't spent the time to set my intentions for 2023 yet, but I do know less alcohol and healthier diet are definitely 2 components.11 -
Hello! It’s Amanda, I’m back. It’s a new month and a new year! I’ve been thinking about 2022 and 2023. I’ve got some goals for the year and staying 98% AF is one of them. I love this group, I love this thread, it really works.
1/1: AF
I saw my mom yesterday and she was talking about cutting back on the wine again. She knows my dad needs to cut back too but 4:00 comes at their house and it’s like an alarm goes off, the wine gets poured. I simply told her I would support them however I could.
Back to work and doctor’s appointments this week.

@forestdweller1 I love orange cats. People say they don’t have 2 brain cells to rub together and they are derps but I love my orange boy and can’t imagine life without him!
@MissMay Thank you for the photos, I will live vicariously through you this winter, thank you.
@SunnyDays930 Im so glad you left that party when you did! And that you were sober! Good for you! I really like your “less and more” intentions list. Gives me something to think about.6 -
Lost count of my drinks the last few weeks in December. Tons of excuses ... mainly a full house of unexpected company with my mom's cancelled flight, daughter's 80+ year old sewage pipes collapsing so her family including dogs and baby moved in with us during repairs, son & his wife and dog from Austin visiting, etc etc etc. The wine & bourbon were flowing.
Trying for a sort of DRY January after the 1st! Thursdays being the only exceptions when planned dining out with friends going forward in January. We do have 2 nice red wines that were gifts in the wine rack that might be used for steak night ... we will see. Did our annual budget reflection and noted we spent $6000 in 2022 on alcohol (2019 it was just $2300). Our average wine bottle jumped from $12-15 up to $25-35. This doesn't include when it was purchased at grocery store or restaurant. DH is on board to shrink that number in our budget so we'll see where 2023 leads us on this journey.
January 2023
January accountability: 0 days AF
Alcohol: 1 days (4 drinks)
Goal: Limit 2 glasses per day; 20-25 AF days this month.
1/1 - 4 drinks ; 3 wine + 1 bourbon & Diet Coke (My sister was over for dinner and movie. DH actually told her not to bring wine if she comes over again in January)
1/2 - PLANNED AF, DH too9 -
Jan 1 in the books as AF. Yesterday, my husband and his friend who was over, were drinking some beers while we all watched football. I stuck with the seltzer. Before bed my husband said he wished he hadn't had any beer because he will never lose weight otherwise. I will just be as supportive as I can while not nagging him. I know MY drinking less is at least making him think about his own drinking. I weigh a measly 4.6 lbs less than this time last year but I will take it.12

Good Monday morning. The first Monday of 2023.
Let's get motivated!!

After a debilitating hangover on 1/1, I have to put my mind to this. I am queen of mindless drinking, pouring more and thinking less. I am shooting for Dry January. Husband was walking to get a scotch in the other room, and I said, give your liver a rest. So he did. I need his support in a way. I know I can do this myself and have. I have gone on dry vacations with drinking friends. I hope the pain and suffering of yesterday's hangover will stick with me for a very long time.11 -
@MissMay Thanks for posting the standard drinks amounts. It's a great reminder.
All - Thanks for all your great posts. I can't express enough what this group means to me.10 -
Hi All! I have been a part of this group for a few months. I'm drinking less for health and weight loss. With this group's support/encouragement I've been able to make significant changes to my drinking habits. I met last month's goal: 16 AF days.
1/1: Drinks (0.5) - Happy January 2! We went out for dinner last night to enjoy the end of our time off so no cooking. I'm off today as well but will be cooking tonight and getting ready to get back into the grind at work tomorrow. The restaurant had one choice of NA beer, a Stella, which was decent. I also had a few sips of hubby's hazy IPA. I almost didn't count it but to keep myself accountable, I have added it as an A day. Still, it's not bad. Normally I would have had 1 or 2 of those high-cal IPAs. My weight is up, up today after my NYE drinks and late night snacking. This is my pattern. I want to lose 10 pounds. I do well for awhile, then BOOM! I sabotage myself. But seriously, besides all of the health benefits, cutting out the 2-4 drinks every evening should eventually show up on the scale. Right?

@RubyRed427 very sorry to hear the drink devil got under your skin. New Year NEW DAY, NEW MIND SET.
BTW did I miss something?? HUSBAND???? When did this take place???
Glad to have you joining us for support.6 -
Happy Jan 2nd!
Day 1: AF !
Being AF really helps with curbing the after dinner snacking!8 -
Happy 2023 to everyone! I lurk for the periodic alcohol free cocktail tips and enjoy hearing of everyone’s successes (and I have also experienced your downs). I am posting to say that December 30 was my 1 year totally completely sober anniversary. Meaning not a drop of alcohol passed my lips all year - even for a taste or a 90th birthday toast. I had been mostly alcohol free for about 3 years prior, but with notable fails when I was depressed and down on myself, or when I decided that one glass won’t hurt since I’ve been sober so long, and it turned back into having a glass for no reason the next day too.
FWIW I have been thinking a lot about what it was that really helped me not make the choice to drink this past year and I think it is knowing the reason why I am not drinking, and having a meaningful enough reason why. In the past my whys were all health and weight loss related which were easy (for me) to blow off. But I ultimately decided my why is that I want to be really present for both the good and the bad in my life. I care for elderly parents and an elderly aunt and have plenty of stress and reasons to want to “escape”, but in these past several years I have come to realize both that I can’t escape and I don’t want to. I want to be present for every last minute that I have with them, and to experience their love, their wisdom, their crankiness, their forgetting who I am, and everything else that goes along with it. I would be devastated if I woke up and they were gone and I had missed the last years with them by living it in a haze of masking my feelings in alcohol.
You are all an amazing group of people, providing each other as well as countless others support and strength. I wish you all health, strength and success with whatever your goals may be. Less, dry, or damp 2023!

Today is AF day 2. The good news: my waist shrunk a bit - from 34 to 32 inches. I'll gracefully accept any progress. That's during holiday season and with eating chocolate almost daily (yes I know...) but not drinking most days in Dec.
It's the not drinking that helps weight drop off after several weeks.
Today I am going out to the international market, sort of a food shopping date with my husband. We are trying to fixate on trying out new asian recipes.
Preparation is key for me. I got my exercise in (dopamine fix) and I am working on new ways to spend my time.
Note to self: Remember, you are in charge of you.......10 -

Ugh. Started the New Year with Covid. I had an AF NYE and still felt hungover the next day. Covid will make it easy to start January with reduced drinking.
Goals 20 AF days, only with other people, only 2 drinks a day.13 -
@bover145 - I'm sorry you have COVID and hope you feel better soon!7

Hi All! I've been AF since 6/2/22 and going strong. Doing AA Zoom meetings to connect with like-minded people is helpful for me. I just decided to stop drinking because it never led to anything positive in my life. Being and staying sober is incredibly empowering. We can do this!+13

Hello everyone!
Well Jan 1 we had our planned beer out at lunch then I was done for the day. I will count it but kicking and screaming (sorta-I did enjoy it). Today I treated myself to a late Christmas gift to ME.
A book from Barnes & Nobel. Zero Proof Drinks & More. So far I am excited. DH is also committing with me (for now, I will take it) to try out the new recipes. I am finishing making some lemon/lime shrug and a simple mint syrup.
Tonights AF drink? Cucumber Lemon/Lime tonic will be one of them, then I think I will try the Mixed Citrus Radler.
That should tide me over for most of the evening.....of course as @MissMay and others whom we are fond of emphasis .....it's all in the correct glass.
If you would like any of the recipes let me know!....Can't believe I am this excited for evening to roll around to sip and not slide into bed.10 -

My drink of choice tonight. Was very tempted to add a couple of splashes of something to take the edge off... but didn't and won't Very delicious just the way it is. 😋
Besides 30 calories is much better for me than a couple of hundred it could've added up to 😊8 -
Today was better. We did a short helicopter tour which is always fun, then I dragged HBIC along for the day yesterday should've been - a short drive down through Wears Valley, stopping for trout for lunch in Townsend before taking a leisurely drive with stops at places like The Sinks, Meigs Falls, Mannis Branch Falls, and Laurel Falls before heading back up to the cabin by way of Gatlinburg. The hike up to Laurel Falls was cool, 400 some odd feet of elevation change over the course of about 1.3 miles, about 2600' at the top. It was crowded, though, lots of noisy tourists with selfie sticks perching precariously in alarming places and gibbering the way tourists do. Ugh. Mannis Branch Falls was kinda cooler, I knew where it was but it wasn't marked and didn't really stand out, so when I pulled off and we trekked down a path that wasn't much more than a rabbit trail, we found ourselves alone on the banks looking at a really nice spot. I liked the alone part.
Dinner was reasonable, and I ended the night with a cigar and a beer on the balcony, so yeah, two days into the year and two A days, and I am not going to sweat it. It was a good day. No idea what we're doing tomorrow. I might go buy a Microtech Ultratech at SMKW just because it's there and I can.

Another quiet day with my son's family. I love being with them, but I really need to get back into my exercise and healthy eating routine. I will head back to AZ on Friday. Another AF day in the books.

Hi Everyone I'm Andy from Stockholm, Sweden.
Happy New Year!
I've posted on these threads on and (mostly) off for a couple of years. I going to try and keep posting this year even if I'm drinking regularly (which I hope I'm not).
I managed 45 days AF in 2022 (all in Sept-Nov) and when I do drink I drink way too much
My goal for 2023 is to stop drinking out of habit and on a daily basis. I turn 50 in May and I need to stop drinking like I'm in my 20s. Actually I couldn't have afforded to drink like this in my 20s
Short term goal is a completely dry January. I do better with abstinence than I do with moderation.
Medium term I want to have only a couple of drinking days between now and my birthday on the 1st of May.
So far I am 2 days AF and tonight WILL be number 3
My wife has said she's joining me for dry January and so far she is. Which is excellent.

Good to see you @Lilylady3k , I hope your holidays were good, if a bit chaotic?
Welcome back @Stockholm_Andy where are you traveling to next? We like pictures in this group. Stick with us, we will support you in your dry January!8 -
I still miss the ritual of wine when I'm cooking, until I found quality NA wine. There was a store in the city of Rochester selling it called AltBar. There's a lot of bad/sugary/grape juicey ones out there, but the Blanc de blanc by Prima Pave is 100% *just* like drinking a sparkling sauvignon blanc, minus the 3am wake up and next day headache. I'm in love with this stuff. Also loving the NA low cal beers at the grocery store.8

Unplanned drinks 1/1. Got so used to spending holidays alone this year (with DH) that when we got invited unexpectedly to a gathering Sun, I was caught off guard (and hadn't had either Champagne nor Eggnog all season, so of course, I had both). That was most of this week's booze, but not beating myself up.
I made a graphic to help me quickly visualize my running tally. When the wine glass is empty, I'm done for week (or should be
