LESS Alcohol ~ JANUARY 2023 ~ One Day At A Time

Happy New Year! I've lurked this thread for a couple of months and taking a little leap to post my own story and goals! I noticed about 6-7 months ago (and not for the first time truthfully) that my drinking was affecting my health and weight loss goals- took a very long time to start incorporating better habits but before Thanksgiving I was doing much better. The last 6 weeks have been a bit more up and down - however, I dont know if it's the new year but I feel more focused and ready to truly commit again...hopefully for the last time. I ordered some NA bitters and "Peak" mocktails to add to my sparkling water + juice mocktails - here goes nothing!

Love the energy on this board!
Feeling better today - this is my 2nd bout of covid and not nearly as awful as my last episode. But no issue staying AF these days.
Goals 20 AF days, only with other people, only 2 drinks a day.
AF - Jan 1, 2

Hi All! I have been a part of this group for a few months. I'm drinking less for health and weight loss. With this group's support/encouragement I've been able to make significant changes to my drinking habits. I met last month's goal: 16 AF days.
1/1: Drinks (0.5)
1/2: AF - I realized something about myself last night. On the AF days, I'll drink one non-alcoholic beer with dinner, and no more. To stop after that one seems to help me stay away from late night snacking. On my A days I allow myself to have two drinks (when sticking to plan). I need to adjust my thinking. Can I change it up and also limit myself on the A days to only one beverage?
Well, back to work today.... Hi Ho! Hi Ho! ... I'm late getting started because I've been reading everyone's updates.

@mainlylisa Love your graphic. What did you use to you create it?5

@joans1976 Big virtual hugs to you.4

@mfowler883 Thanks for sharing your hiking story. Your description took me there, which was nice because I'm having to go back to work today. I'm ready for a trip like that. We go camping with our eldest son and friends at least once a year. It inspires me to start planning now.6

Ha! This is silly but I was curious and looked up the lyrics to the Snow White dwarf's song and found out that I've been spelling it and singing it wrong for many years. The chorus is "Heigh-ho, Heigh-ho, It's home from work we go". I've been singing it as "it's off to work we go" for many years. It makes sense that they're happy to be heading home from work instead of to work. But now I must really go off to work! Happy Tuesday, everyone.8

@RockinRobyn672 Thanks--used Canva, but PPT can be used for easily creating graphics, too! And I've also been singing "...off to work we go!" for half a decade. Did someone change the lyrics? Is this part of the Quiet Quitting movement?4

Good morning to all
AF last night so yeah but weight is still up too. Now If I could just find an off switch for snacking my life would be so much easier.
last nights drink of choice Cucumber lemon/lime. It really was good, I had two! But this morning I feel a tad bloaty but that could be because of the all the chex party mix I shoveled in. LOL

Good to see you @Lilylady3k , I hope your holidays were good, if a bit chaotic?
@joans1976 - Thank you! Good to return to daily / weekly posting. The holidays were wonderful spending it with the family but way to crazy with so many people, babies and dogs running through my home ... as well as all the alcohol that my adult children supplied to our cabinets and wine rack while they were here.
I hope that you are doing well and finding your groove on the health front.6 -
Happy New Year everyone.
I am Dawn, I live in SE BC Canada
My ongoing goal remains, 16-20 AF days per month.
Last month I had 18AF days
I do this diary style to keep track, and post the next morning
.
Sunday January 01 - AF
Monday January 02 - AF
Loving everyone's posts, a bit crunched for time so will comment more another time.

Hi all! I am here for the inspiration and the motivation! I am back on MFP after a little hiatus. My alcohol story is a very familiar one I'm sure. Social drinker becomes at-home drinker, becomes stress drinker, becomes no-reason-needed drinker. Wine is my drink of choice. If I am somewhere that has alcohol, but no white wine, I can easily abstain... but I have no control if it's available to me.
I am looking forward to the next 28 days of my Dry January (no strong urges so far... but I know that will change). Evenings are the time I crave the most, so I am trying to fill my schedule with things that need my full attention - a sewing class, an online book club, home projects, etc.
I will take February onward as it comes. One day at a time.
Take care and be well! - Georgia9 -

Hi! (*blush*) I hate admitting that I drink too much, but I know it’s true. I have managed to cut down a bit. Used to drink every day, now not every day. I’d like to pretty much eliminate it if possible. I don’t get bad withdrawal symptoms, per se (I guess not physically really, although I do get physical hangover symptoms) but I do get moody and a bit irritable. I’ve gone 1-2 days recently and would like to increase that. I’d also like to disassociate drinking from some common events - like running errands, grocery shopping, cleaning and cooking (usually have some wine when I cook/food prep). Even going to the gym, I used to stop and get “lunch” (including booze) afterwards, often.
Basically, I would LOVE support from people that understand!! Please send me a friend request if you want to give and get support. So glad I found this post. ❤️14 -
Not an easy day at work. Husband had two glasses on the counter and offered me a wine.
I said not today. He's having one but I'm having a Heineken OO.

1/2 AF
1/3 AF (barely) - day three is always tempting because my brain is feeling weird without alcohol.13 -
I will continue trying to be AF in January and hopefully beyond. I have lost a few lbs and want to continue to do so. The biggest reason is that I am no longer a "fun" drunk. I get morose and nasty and I do not want to hurt relationships in my life. I don't think I can moderate like so many of you. Once a pickle is a pickle, it can't turn back into a cucumber. I appreciate all the encouragement here. I hope everyone has success meeting their personal goals.15

On the mend but still under the weather...
Goals 20 AF days, only with other people, only 2 drinks a day.
AF - Jan 1, 2, 39 -
January accountability: 2 days AF
Alcohol: 1 days (4 drinks)
Goal: Limit 2 glasses per day; 20-25 AF days this month.
1/1 - 4 drinks ; 3 wine + 1 bourbon & Diet Coke (my sister was over for dinner and movie)
1/2 - AF, DH too
1/3 - AF
Decided to not join DH when he poured an after dinner drink of bourbon & Diet Coke. His plan Sunday evening when my sister left was to go the rest of January dry. Did great yesterday. But then I think he is feeling down today since he is not able to run or long walk like he wants and usually does but his feet and ankle are acting up. That is what I'm assuming. But who knows his reasons.
I just know that today I planned to not drink and I'm following through to try and keep my number of AF days > A days so I'm not cramming at the end of the month. I usually target 12-16 AF days each month which is a struggle but decided to go for a dryer January and shoot for 20-25 AF days. Hmmmmm here is to not getting derailed!
Good luck with your own goals!

Thanks everyone for the inspiration.12 -
Day 3 AF done. Super freaking difficult! My husband who was AF for 2 days decided to drink in front of me and fell asleep at 6:30pm, sitting down at the table. So not nice and I feel very irritable. Hit the chocolate stash and not counting calories.
Every day is a new beginning to making our lives better....in case one day is not perfect, the nice thing is that we work on making the next day better. The critical part is never giving up on us and always try harder the next day.
Happy to see familiar faces on here as well as newcomers!

@mainelylisa
Thanks for the tip. I may try to create it in PPT.
Regarding the Heigh-ho song and Quiet Quitting, too funny! When I look up the lyrics it's "home from work". Why is it that we thought it was the other way around? Maybe they sang it both ways. I'm going to have to do a little more research. I may just re-watch that movie, if I can find it.5 -
@lmlmrn Your cucumber lime drink looks delicious!6

Another A day tonight, the boy and I killed the last of the dunkels while kicking around the pool table upstairs. I haven't really shot pool much in 25 years. It was another pretty good day, we drove across Newfound Gap into Cherokee and back with several stops along the way. We hiked a short segment of the trail at Chimney Tops, which was really beautiful with bridges overlooking the river, and a short segment of the trail along the river at Oconaluftee along with several other stops at overlooks and turnouts. We ate frybread "Indian Tacos" at Paul's in Cherokee, which was really good.
Getting in some hiking this week has been really awesome. Anyway, that was the last of the beer, so probably AF for the remainder of the trip.

Hello! It’s Amanda, I’m back. It’s a new month and a new year! I’ve been thinking about 2022 and 2023. I’ve got some goals for the year and staying 98% AF is one of them. I love this group, I love this thread, it really works.
1/1: AF
I saw my mom yesterday and she was talking about cutting back on the wine again. She knows my dad needs to cut back too but 4:00 comes at their house and it’s like an alarm goes off, the wine gets poured. I simply told her I would support them however I could.
Back to work and doctor’s appointments this week.
1/2: AF
Sad and nervous today. Sticking with my meditation goals so that’s something.
1/3: AF
Sad and nervous today too. Considered coming home and drinking vodka while I was in the doctor’s office yesterday. I didn’t but the feeling was real. I know I’m supposed to be strong but I’m not sure I can make it through this breast cancer *kitten*. Ahh maybe I’m just feeling sorry for myself.

@globalhiker That would irritate me too! I went headfirst into a bag of chocolate last night, better than alcohol but….
Today is a new day right?6 -
I still miss the ritual of wine when I'm cooking, until I found quality NA wine. There was a store in the city of Rochester selling it called AltBar. There's a lot of bad/sugary/grape juicey ones out there, but the Blanc de blanc by Prima Pave is 100% *just* like drinking a sparkling sauvignon blanc, minus the 3am wake up and next day headache. I'm in love with this stuff. Also loving the NA low cal beers at the grocery store.
Wait, what now???? A really good NA wine?????? I’m definitely going to look for it!3 -

Oh it’s definitely the Chex Mix, in all it’s salty, delicious glory!!4 -
Hello newbies and oldbies!!!!!!
AF last night, and I’ve avoided the bready carbs, so my weight is finally down a little. I have to keep that trend up! We have a patient who brings in Philadelphia Soft Pretzels when he comes in twice a week. He is the most lovely man, but those warm pretzels just stare at me, behind the desk! I think today I am going to move them into the kitchen so they don’t tempt me at every turn.
Being sick last week is a blessing in disguise because it kick started my reduction in alcohol. It’s easier this week to stay AF but that’s also probably a combination of a new year’s resolution and where I am in my cycle. Give me two weeks and I will be craving all the bread, cereal and alcohol. I’m enjoying this little reprieve for now.
I worked out Monday, for the first time in a
week. We did squats, which I didn’t think were all that bad. Holy cow, yesterday I went to sit down, and I could barely do it! So sore! Plus I had a tennis drill and my legs were like lead. Egads, amazing how much a person atrophies in a week!8 -

Big hug to you. I can only imagine how scared you must feel, and how much energy you’re about to expend fighting this. I suspect you will find a strength you didn’t even know you had. Besides, Bali awaits!!!!! More hugs to you!7
