LESS Alcohol ~ JANUARY 2023 ~ One Day At A Time

AF so far for Jan. I felt like a drink today midday because I delayed lunch for too long and I had worked out hard this morning. I opened a Lagunitas IPNA while my lunch was in the microwave and seriously, after one-third of it, I forgot all about drinking.
Wow. This is such a mental thing.
I am done with the expensive faux-spirits. The rum one made me race to the bathroom. A lot.The gin one burned my tongue and the tequila was actually decent with a splash of cranberry but this is not sustainable at $40 a bottle.
Cravings for a taste is such a real thing. For several days I have been craving Diet Sunkist. Not kidding, it's my latest addiction. I drank a lot of it for a few days over the holidays (I am not a soda person), then I read the ingredient label and thought twice about buying more. Now my latest obsession is how to find a good tasting diet orange soda without all the artificial bad stuff.7 -
Jan 1-9 AF
Cravings are a bit subsided in the evening. Honestly I haven’t really been “tested” here at home. It’ll be when we go out to our fav bar for burger night or our next fav for the Gorgonzola dip. That’s the real test - make food AND alcohol choices. Since I am looking to stay AF for January I am happy to avoid these situations altogether!
Have an awesome day. - Georgia8 -
Hello! It’s Amanda, I’m back. It’s a new month and a new year! I’ve been thinking about 2022 and 2023. I’ve got some goals for the year and staying 98% AF is one of them. I love this group, I love this thread, it really works.

Not exactly "none" but better than if I was not trying to be accountable.7 -
@globakhiker The struggle is real when it comes to finding good alcohol alternatives! It seems that the beer drinkers have it on lock- lots of great NA beers out there. I’m a little jealous! For us wine or liquor drinkers? Eh, not so much! Good luck finding a diet orange soda substitute. That’s going to be even harder!7

Robyn here. I have been a part of this group for a few months and have significantly reduced my alcohol intake. I'm drinking less for health and weight loss.
Goal: 16-20 AF days monthly. Last Month: 16 AF days. I post the next morning"
1/9: AF - Hubby and I split 3 Heineken 0.0s with dinner yesterday. I have gained back some recent weight loss. I know why. I've been going over calorie goal for the past few days. I guess I'm making up the calories in food rather than drink. You'd think/hope that there would be a silver lining with the weight thing when cutting back on high-calorie beers. My plan is to do a better job sticking with the daily calories and to stay AF until the weekend.

@Stockholm_Andy I am so glad you wrote this in your last post
"Starting to think about how I tackle the rest of 2023. Last time i did a month AF I then dived straight back into my old ways once I'd completed the challenge to myself."
The word challenge as you see is the key.
I moved the LESS Alcohol thread out of the challenges category on MFP as of Dec 2020 into the MOTIVATION AND SUPPORT category.
It was originally started in challenges back in 2017 and I noticed over years of participating that so many people took it as a short term fix and would do a crash course then be right back where they started or even worse.
Drinking LESS needs to be approached as a life style change for the long run. Challenges are fun and sometimes cliché (ex:ice bucket challenge LOL)
Thank you for sparking that thought in my head with your post.
Thank you for sparking that11 -
My goal is to be AF at home. So far for January 10 days AF at home and seven days completely AF.
Today is 11 Jan (1.22am) and last night (10 Jan) I succumbed to buying a bottle of wine for home along with a small bag of twisties and chips, the twisties I ate, with at least half the chips ending up in the bin. The wine I drank it all. Not sure why I succumbed but obviously it was easier to give in than to not. Heading back to work tomorrow after Christmas break...a reason? Not sure it is...work isn't particularly stressful and I do enjoy it. I did promise myself that would be the last bottle of wine at home for January, I hope that sticks, we will see.
Positive note one: One bottle in 10 days is much better than the five or more I would have had by now.
Positive note two: I signed up back at the gym today. Aim to be go at least two times a week for the short term and increase to three times a week once I have a established a routine.
Next week, my two left feet and I have signed up for line dancing lessons.

I also had to slap myself in the head to stop trying to dispose of all the Christmas goodies people gifted us during the holidays by eating them.
It creeps up fast. A nibble here, popping a chocolate there. We had attended a New Years Eve brunch at a family members home and I totally ran with the pack there. Double banana cake servings and more. Then I wondered why my favorite slacks were snug the other night. UGH.
The freezer comes in handy for that, or sharing them with others. I will take some with me to the gallery I work at today and let other people there enjoy them .
WEEK TWO feeling good.

Just finished a 20 minute weighted glove kick boxing workout. BAM!12 -
Continued struggling with anxiety yesterday. I did get in a Pilates class and stretch session. Had drinks alone last night.
Got up early and had a remote session with my counselor. She helped me work through some anxiety inducing pervasive thoughts I keep having. Golfing with friends today. I may have a few drinks.

AF yesterday. Ate more than I should have for dinner, but got in a lot of activity. We walked about two miles in the afternoon, and I squeezed in some gym time after dinner.
Today we get back to work. That should help with getting routines stabilized again.

Thank you : - )
Actually, I became a waitress at age 60, so yes, on my feet constantly.
That was hardly gradually getting back to movement lol. Yes, my ankle was very sore at the end of the day, but feels good this morning. It takes a while (2-6 weeks) for the actual results of the cortisteroid to work. I definitely want to continue to have a very active lifestyle into the future, so this should help make that happen.9 -
@lmlmrn
Wow, you are packing? Did I miss something and you found a place to move to and sold your house?3 -
@rockinrobyn
Foot surgery???? Oh my gosh!! There are like a gazillion bones in the foot.
What has happened that led to this?3 -
@globalhiker
Good for you on the AF front.
Interesting info about the AF liquors too.
Taste is one thing for sure, for me it is also the effects that I crave.
I hope that you find a nice orange soda.4 -
Just a quick flying visit as work is pretty crazy.
9 out of 9 days AF. Will be 10 by the end of the night.
I bought at few AF beer yesterday. Leffe Belgium Blonde and Morretti Italian Pils. In the end I didn't even have one and stuck to fizzy water with sugar free squash.
I hope you all smash your targets today (o:

@Breathe57103
I am glad to hear that you have a counselor to work through stuff with.
Good on you for getting some physical activity in, that goes a long way.6 -
Hello to all
Last night I made a new recipe in my zero proof mocktail book. I have already forgotten the name but it had a spicy salted rim (course salt and cajun seasoning) 1 AF beer, 2oz tomato juice (I only had V8), hot sauce, worcestershire sauce.....I had two! They were great but this am--sodium and I are not friends, the scale told me so.
The price I pay to be AF LOL
But that does not mean I am giving up these yummy drinks
So off to my weight/strength training then I think I will continue to empty my art/office for painting.
@Womona yes we did sell the building. The business has closed for all intense purposes. DH still has some loose ends we need to tie up. I am not concentrating on our house and packing things up. We have given ourselves until the end of March to complete packing and stacking items in our garage.
@MissMay how did the art reception go??? Did I miss your comments on it?5 -
I am Dawn, I live in SE BC Canada
My ongoing goal remains, 16-20 AF days per month.
Last month I had 18AF days
I do this diary style to keep track, and post the next morning
Friday January 06 - 2 drinks in the afternoon, none in the evening. Freezing came out, but I didn't have any pain after that until much later in the night.
Saturday January 07 - 2 drinks in the afternoon (again), none in the evening. Couldn't seem to get enough food into me, but I gave myself a pass on that. Planned AF for Sunday.
Sunday January 08 - AF - Back to work this Monday morning. Ankle is feeling pretty much like it did before the steroid shot, but I was told 2-6 weeks to feel full results. My plan is to have drinks on the weekend and one weeknight.
Monday January 09 - AF - Hoping to go to public skating at the arena on Wednesday during my split shift break. Even when it was really hurting, skates on made it feel comfortable. Hockey skates have a great deal of support.

@globalhiker ...Have you tried orange-mango ICE ? Fizzy, sweet & no calories. Yes, it has a list of ingredients that are unpronouncable, but each of them has an explanation of why it's in there, which I found reassuring. NOT a shill for this company, I just need to drink something that's not wine.
I've tried all the "top-rated" NA wines and found them disgusting. After I used most of a bottle of FRE as drain cleaner, I'm done !
There's an opportunity out there for someone to become a billionaire...create a NA wine that actually tastes like the real stuff.
The day that most New Year's Resolutions come to a sad end is January 13th. It falls on a Friday this year. 🙄
Let's make this a "Stay Strong Friday".🦸12 -
January accountability: 5 days AF
Alcohol: 5 days (13 drinks)
Goal: Limit 2 glasses per day; 20-25 AF days this month.

Brunch with friends today and I did not partake in the mimosas. Then this evening after dinner DH has a meeting with his modeling group IPMS. Neither of us wanted wine with dinner. Now home alone till later tonight and drinking my Sprite Zero Winter Spiced Cranberry and feeling good about my choices today.

How is it Wednesday already?
10 Days AF out of 10.
Still going strong.

My Goals for January: Limit 2 glasses per day; 20-25 AF days this month.
I usually target 12-16 AF days each month which is usually a challenge … hitting 20 days since DH backed out of his dry January commitment is definitely influencing me to join him on weekdays I had not planned when setting the goal. Going for it anyway!

Had some cravings yesterday. Just one little drink. Then I thought about the dry mouth, the racing heart beat, the nausea and heartburn and kicked the craving right out of my head!
