I don't have a location icon and can't search local restaurants and their menus. Any ideas?

Google...?
Just as an aside - small local restaurants are not generally in the myfitnesspal FOOD lookup database and you most likely won't find nutrition info online, though they may have a website and have their menu on their own website. They have no need (requirement/regulation) to lab-test their foods if they're a mom and pop or family owned small restaurant.
In that case, you'll have to make your best guess on quantities and calories. Life and weight management are full of instances like that. Parties, eating in restaurants, going to peoples' houses, etc. You'll figure it out.0 -
I approach it a different way. I pick the restaurant, then google the menu. Only large chains are required to include nutrition information.
If I'm in an unfamiliar area and want Thai food for example, I'll google "Thai food near me" and go from there.0 -
Restaurants are a challenge to dieters in any case! You never really know how things are prepared. Even if you go to a common chain, they might put a little more or less mayo on the sandwich, if you know what I mean. If you really want to control your intake, you have to make most of your food yourself, limiting restaurant visits.
And, if you are trying to limit calories, it pays to "skip the carbs," meaning get an entrée (fish or chicken) with just vegetables or salad. Then, look up the components of the entrée and make some guesses to amounts. Some smart person here recommended taking a picture of your meal so you could suss it out later. Nowadays, no one will even notice, as it's done so commonly!
Every so often you will go to a great meal that has it all, and there is no reason to avoid such pleasures indefinitely. In these cases, I do a "quick add" of a ton of calories. (It's an option next to ADD FOOD under the "...") If it's a huge entrée, I might add 1000kcals. If it's a huge entrée with a dessert, I might add 1500kcals. This encourages me to cut back a little to accommodate the (delicious) extra calories.0
