running and HR?

For the past few months I've been trying to get myself to like running but everytime I run a 10 min mile my HR goes up to 170/180 and then I have stop and walk for 5 minutes. I wanted running 5ks this fall and hopefully longer by spring but I can't go longer than a mile without walking so my heart doesn't fly out of my chest. That's a pretty high heartrate right?

Max for your age is around 189, so 170 is in range. Slow your pace down to increase your distance. Why do you have to run a 10 minute mile out of the gate? There is nothing wrong with walking intervals too. Look at couch to 5k if you want a program to increase distance and endurance.0

For me it is normal to get in that range, butI don't have any heart problems. I don't stop when I get above 180....0

Yes, unless you are doing intervals. First of all, your Max HR is determined by a few factors: age and weight being two of them.
My Max HR (at 38yrs old and 180lbs), is near 183. That's the highest I was ever able to push it by doing intervals or hill work. So how do you get it lower?
Run slower than 10mm, and build your endurance.
Run short intervals that intentionally get your HR way up there.
Do short Tempo runs.
All of these will help your heart get into better shape.0 -
I am between 150 and 180 for my whole run, not uncommon for me to spend some of my time near 170 depending how fast I am running but usually sit at about 162. When I am doing hills I am around 180 by the time I get to the top. This is a good pace for me, everyone is different. If you are uncomfortable then slow it down.0

YOu can get a fitness test to test your maximum heart rate - mine is 'young' for my age (: the age MHR is just rule of thumb but it differs for actual individuals - but as your age is generally decreases (I believe).0

Run slower. I love running, BUT, the first mile is always a drag. Take it really slow the first mile and work up your speed. After mile 1, it is smooth sailing. My miles are 10.5 to 11 minutes, and I don't worry about heart rate. I AM running, for goodness sake. Of course, if you were to experience palpitations or chest pain, you would walk it out and seek medical attention.0

It's pretty high, but not abnormal. Your heart (and lungs) tend to work a bit harder when you first start running, once your body becomes conditioned to running more, it should become more stable. If you start feeling dizzy, or experiencing chest pain/tightening, then I would be more concerned. I have been running for a few years now and when I get back into it after a long stretch of not running, my heart rate bounces from 126-200 (I've started using a heart rate monitor).
However, if you're truly worried, you should ask your doctor. Running is tough, so don't beat yourself up if it takes time to get used to it.0 -
Just take it slower. If your goal is to run a 5k, work on distance and not speed. Who cares if you run an 11-12 minute miles if you still finish the race!0
