5k tomorrow...side "stitch" today

Tomorrow will be my first 5k "race" and I am planning on walking/jogging it. I've worked hard on the treadmill, outside on nice days, and cross trained to get myself ready.

On Monday of this week, I developed what can be best described as a side stitch in my right side, underneath the last rib. Monday was the worse, but it still bothered me occasionally throughout the week.

I would like to go to the gym today, but I don't want to make the problem worse. I'm thinking about taking today off. I guess I'm looking for opinions on what others would do and advice on any stretches/exercises I can do to get rid of this.

Thanks!

Take a day of rest. Especially since you've worked so hard. Try using heat on it tonight & befor ethe race tomorrow. You might find some relief. Good luck! And congrats on your first 5k!

I've read the side stitch could be due to shallow breathing. concentrate on the your breathing - blow out a candle, slower and intake same. Good Luck on the 5k!
  • When you've injured yourself, it is good to take a break. I'd recommend a day off with maybe some light stretching/yoga to help relax the muscle. Pushing a slight injury can make it a major one, or potentially even make it chronic.

It's okay to take breaks anyway. Giving yourself at least one day of rest every week allows your muscles to heal and build. You can actually build muscle faster if you have regular breaks in your training schedule!

Good luck on your 5K. They're a lot of fun and I'm sure you'll do well. Have a blast!

I would rest so you are at your best for tomorrow. Sunday I am doing my first 5k and I stopped running on Wed, so I have fresh legs. I am still taking long walks but no running until Sunday morning.
