Noom or MFP pre diabetes (edit-just cancelled Noom lol)

Hello from Montreal 🇨🇦 I am going to be 50 at the end of this year and I’m ready to run into my 50’s (minus 50 lbs) in the best shape of my life. That said, I was successful here in 2015-2017 and kept 22lbs off until …it went back on lol 😂. I’m pre diabetic, have herniated discs and spinal stenosis (along with some other comorbidities) and decided to try Noom last night. I think I was looking for help with the psychological aspects to my self destructive behaviour. Though in theory it’s a great idea, there are no macros and watching my sugars/fibre/fats should be my first priority as opposed to color coding and caloric density factors. The inflammation related to my carb/chocolaholism is literally keeping me in bed any chance I can get. Anyone doing both apps in tandem? To Noom or not …or MFP as a

I’m commenting to myself so if anyone is questioning 🤨 Noom does NOT understand Glycemic Index ….this is dangerous! Stick with my fitness pal! Also the premium version here is a third of the price ! Let’s go !!!!1

Welcome to MFP. I just use the free version, it's easy to use. I've logged food since 2007 on this site. It's an easy to understand concept, sometimes not that easy to implement.
You can change your macros in Goals.
The psychological part: yeah, I get that. Using food as comfort or celebration is a problem. It takes time to rein that in. Lots of threads here to read with ideas.2 -
I was pre-diabetic until I dropped 43 pounds. I have since dropped 11 more. I have fibromyalgia and herniated disks in my lower back. The pain I was in while obese was a daily struggle. As the weight came off the pain lessened. I just realized a couple days ago that I haven't been in pain in quite a while. But, wouldn't you know, as soon as I think that, the pain starts back up. It's doesn't stick around long anymore though. My energy level has skyrocketed too! I have been limiting my sugar intake so my sugar is at normal levels now. I do hope you have much success on here. I am not sure how I would have lost this weight without MFP.5

I tried Noom in January. It had me eating well over 2000 calories per day. I didn’t lose any weight. I started MFP in February and have lost six pounds. It has me eating 1650 a day. I think everything about MFP premium is superior. If you want the benefit of Noom, read the Beck Diet Solution. I swear much of Noom is straight from that book down to saying “Oh well” when you can’t eat what you want. I hear you about the sweets. They were a huge problem for me so I cut them out cold Turkey. I’m on day 14 of doing that and I’m consistently eating the right number of calories. It makes such a big difference!!1

Now I came from Noom and really enjoyed the course I did. It helped me change my habits, figure out why I sabotage myself, and taught me how to make reasonable sustainable goals. It did not teach me much about nutrition and I often didn’t eat according to their color chart as I had specific dietary needs due to allergies and they preach more of an everything in moderation approach, which is good for a lot of people. Just not me. After the program ended I came her to MFP seeking community which was something I really found to enjoy at Noom. Challenges and having a group or team.. it helps keep me in track.. I lost weight with Noom, about 15 pounds. I have lost about 54 total so far and I’m still losing so it’s all good. Noom isn’t so bad 😉

Thanks everyone! I’m happy to see that there is a community aspect to this app as well, it’s great to have the added support. Thank you for sharing with me everyone, i appreciate it very much ! I’m going more slowly than I intended…I was super motivated to do the entries at noom, less here (I think it has to do with the interface…noom was more artsy and well…so am I lol) I’m logging in every day but not consistently entering my food yet, I am more mindful of what I’m doing but I’m giving myself some time so I am not feeling stressed about it, I’m looking for lifestyle and accountability so…I’ll be patient with myself! I hope everyone is having a great day ! Wishing you all great success in your health journey !❤️1

Not prediabetic, but also lost weight prior while logging at MFP and also regained 25ish in the past few years. And similar age as I turn 49 later this year. (Down 7-8 depending since Jan 2 when I finally got back to working on ME.) I never did more than a free trial with Noom because I have an issue with paying for things that should be free.
I think Noom is good for people who need help assessing what is behind their eating habits. But with a little soul searching you can perhaps do that on your own. My biggest downfall is that if I don't plan, I go for whatever is quick and easy and next thing I know, 1000 calories are downed in a meal. So I try to do better by having a variety of staple items in the pantry, fridge and freezer and a mental list of go-to fast food/take out items that I enjoy and that work for me in terms of calories. My husband has a different issue. He is afraid he won't have enough, so had the habit of overfilling his plate (or ordering extra if takeout/fast food) and then feeling obligated to eat it all in order to avoid food waste. Being aware of that habit has been helpful on its own to intentionally plan a 'normal' sized meal, and he also knows that there are always snacks (yogurt, popcorn, etc.) for later if he wants/needs them.1
