weight loss and anti-depressants

Who is on an antidepressant and is trying to lose weight? What are you on and do you find that it slows down your weight loss? I am on Lexapro. I find it does slow it down a little, and I am wondering what I could switch to that will not prevent my loss.

once i was on anti- depressants and it made me have absolutely no appetite! not that this is a method you should use, but i used effexor xr and it worked very well, eventually my appetite stabilized.

wellbutrin is supposed to kill your appetite, for me it did only for like the first week...seroquil isnt too bad either

i would never take effexor or cymbalta tho, cymbalta gives you the worst brain zaps ever

In order to control my OCD, I have tried different medications and none of them made any effect on whether or not I could lose weight. I didn't have any of the side effects of appetite suppression like listed above.

I've been on Prozac now for 3 years at the same dose and I have no problem losing weight....providing I'm not eating crap and moving, of course =p

    I was on citalopram.
  • Some anti-depressants will slow your metabolism down and others will kill your appetite. Unfortunately it depends on what you are taking. I just recently started back on Zoloft but I also take a metabolism booster when I am feeling sluggish. I would talk to your doctor and maybe they can make some adjustments.

I had the same exact problem.
  • I am on Prozac and I have lost 15 pounds but now I am at a stand still losing less than a pound per week. When I went off them one time(which I know now I can not do) I immediately lost 10 pounds and when I first started them years ago I quickly gained 10. I have been on different things over the years so I have wondered if it keeps some weight on me. I do know when I went off the one time I was so depressed I did not desire to eat so maybe it is a combination of the two. I have tried Effexor and Luvox before this and they are also known to cause weight gain. I am hoping that it does not keep my weight on but rather my eating habits and sedetary life style before now that have been my downfall.

I went on Wellbutrin when I was 15 (and really overweight thanks to a basically non-functioning thyroid)...and within 3 months I lost 30 pounds and have stayed basically the same weight since then, even though I've gone through major life changes like going to college, moving home from college, living in France (okay, fine, I gained a few pounds in France!), graduating college, and starting an office job.

Within one week of being on the antidepressant my appetite went away. And my energy (of which I previously had none) soared. So I went running every day. And then after two years, exercising just became my antidepressant and one day I was able to wake up and just stop taking the antidepressant...and I've been symptom-free since then! Going off the drug definitely made it harder to keep my weight down, though, because now that my thyroid is properly regulated and the Wellbutrin isn't suppressing my appetite, I am a lot hungrier than I used to be! But it's not so bad.

Don't let rate of weight loss be the motivating factor behind switching antidepressants, because if you're still consistently losing AND the medication is working, it might be worthwhile to stick with it!

I just thought I'd share my happy story about antidepressants, exercise and weight loss. I truly hope that you can use the combination successfully as well!
  • Effexor made me break out in hives and my lips swelled and one of my eyes swelled shut, I dropped it cold before seeing my doctor and getting on something else. I had already been on it for 6 months so my doctor thought I was allergic to something else but the sympthoms never returned after I quit it.

I take Paxil. My doctor actually told me on Monday that if I continue to lose the weight that he believes I should be able to wean myself off of the anti-depressant in upcoming months. He did tell me to NOT stop cold turkey and to use my own discretion.

I rather wish wellbutrin had killed my appetite when I was on it, but it didn't. Mind you, I was so miserable coming off the stuff that it's a wonder I didn't lose weight.

Presently I'm on cymbalta and a mood stabilizer, neither of which seem to be effecting my weight loss in the slightest.
  • Never stop anti-depressants cold turkey. You have to titrate down off of them. If you just stop with some of them you can become very sick.

Effexor can cause increased appetite in some people.

agreed! when i decided to come off of them it was because i just felt the same on them or off them ( i would frequently forget to take them) so i told my dr this and of course she says "we should up your dosage" because i didn't feel it was working. i did not agree so i decided to wean off. i think at the time i was taking 2 pills a day... not sure, but i just started taking less and less until i was taking none. i don't regret coming off them for even one minute!

Below is an article about exercise and anti-depressants.... seems exercise can have very positive effects on brian chemestry.

By no means am I suggesting if you are on medication you should stop because you also excerise but thought this info would be interesting addition to this topic.

"Regular exercise could help depression just as effectively as an antidepressant, says a new study published in the September issue of Psychosomatic Medicine.

James A. Blumenthal, a professor of psychology at Duke University, and his team conducted the first ever placebo-controlled clinical trial comparing exercise and an antidepressant. This is significant because this type of research is considered to be the gold standard.

The researchers sorted 202 patients into four groups. After 16 weeks, 47 percent of the group who took the antidepressant Zoloft improved. The groups who exercised--either with or without supervision--had an improvement of 45 percent and 40 percent respectively. An analysis of the groups who exercised versus the group who took an antidepressant found the difference between them to not be statistically significant. In other words, Zoloft and exercise were equally effective. About 30 percent of those in the placebo group improved, which was an expected result. Participants in clinical trials often experience an improvement in symptoms simply due to the power of suggestion.

Blumenthal speculates that exercise lifts mood by increasing either endorphin or serotonin levels in the brain. Endorphins are thought to work as natural painkillers while serotonin is believed to affect mood."

I joined this site over a year ago, I started counting calories eating healthier and exercising, then the winter rolled around and we were stuck indoors. My motivation dwindled and I stopped exercising and counting calories. A month later I became depressed. I was prescribed Citalopram 20mg. I gained back all that I had lost because I was simply too tired and didn't care about trying to lose weight. One day I looked at myself in the mirror and thought... This isn't me! I had to buy size 18 trousers because I was having to squeeze myself into 16. I wore leggings most of the time because nothing fit. My partner took a random picture of me and I was disgusted by the person I had become.
Since then I had decided that the tablets needed to go. I started to slowly wean myself off of the dosage and rejoined MFP. I am now down to 5 mg every 3 days... Usually when the "brain zaps" get too much for me. I have been here for 36 days and lost 18lbs so far.

Exercise and healthy foods can have more benefits to a balanced body and soul that any tablets. Well in my case I have decided that. I hope to be able to fully wean within the next few months.
  • bump! I may need to try some of these meds! I have never been on any type of anti depressant but I may need to try it out!

Please don't take them unless you truly need them for depression. Don't take them for appetite suppression. These meds are serious business and some of them have bad side affects. If you truly need them then by all means. Having been on a few I would never ever take them again unless I was pretty much suicidal. Educate yourself before taking any medication. I gained 90 lbs in 6 months on Effexxor XR and took me two years of HELL to come off it. Now THAT is depressing.

I am surprised I havent tried any depression meds, if any1 needs em? Thats me! Im leary of them for sure!
  • I have been on anti-depressants for over 10 years now, my experience off them was not good for me. I have a family history of suicide on my fathers side of the house and an aunt who has attempted it many times. My doctor says I will always need them I never heard about losing weight and getting off of them though, but maybe I can get off my blood pressure meds.
  • I am on Zoloft a very low dosage. I think it has slowed my weight loss down a little but I can still loose weight. If I could get off it I would but I can't!!
  • Yes, don't abuse these meds because once you take them and you don't have any type of depression/anixety then when you get off them you might start to have those symptoms....Also these meds may make you gain a significant amount of weight.

I (would like to) blame Zoloft for the increase of 10 kilos about 8 years ago. I remember calculating what the (stated possible) 5% weight gain would be and deciding I could live with that. Zoloft kept me awake, nauseous when I ate, with nasty muscle spasmy things. So the Dr put me on something ELSE, I don't remember the name now, to combat the insomnia (taken at the same time). That made me sleep 15 hours straight, and still be lethargic, and nap for two or three hours during the day. I also was taking Somac for the gippy tummy.

Changed to Prozac. That worked better for me. Then in early 2009 I started doing tae bo from the video of a morning, and after a week or so realised I hadn't taken my meds regularly (they had the days of the week on the pack). Decided not to keep taking them. Dr wasn't impressed when I told him 9 months later. But I figure I know *me* better than he does.
