Weak, tired, cranky on cycle 1 of 17DD...suggestions?

My husband and I are on day 5 of cycle 1. He, especially, has notice not more energy but quite a bit less. He doesn't physically feel like working out anymore, and he is cranky. Should we go ahead and add in more healthy carbs, or just make him stick with cycle 1?
For the record, I don't really like "diets", but I was kind of desperate because I have plateaued for over a year, had gained 10 pounds recently randomly, and crave sugar/carbs.
Thanks!

My suggestion is to drop the 17DD and count calories and exercise.0

"Diets" don't work. It needs to be a lifestyle change. Do count your calories and change up your exercises. Being cranky is going to do nothing positive, and is going to bring negative results into everything. Good luck, but personally I would drop the "diet".0

I am kind of thinking the same thing, and I know DH is too.
The 17DD is the 17 Day Diet. It has 4 cycles of 17 days. In the first cycle, you severely limit carbs. The second cycle you had in a few good carbs (added to the 2 pcs of fruit you could have in cycle one) alternating with days of cycle 1. The third cycle adds in more healthy carbs, and the last cycle is where you choose one of the previous cycles to followed and can have 3 cheats on the weekend. I am thinking of maybe doing something like the last cycle but maybe not as many cheats since the weekend is where I usually really get off track.0 -

I have to agree with this. If you are weak and irritable, or anything like that, then your body is definitely telling you something. Anything that causes those side effects is NOT healthy. Have you tried simply zigzagging your calories to get out of your plateau? It has worked for me and for several others I know. Good luck0 -
Have you tried changing up your workouts or maybe even cycling your calories? You've had amazing progress, so I have to assume you know how to do this right and for the long-term. Diets don't work because they're *diets* (and I think you know that too) .. what did you do to lose all the weight?0

Some have suggested it's unhealthy side effects of cutting carbs down too far, I totally agree. I've heard some that use the 17DD do well but I think our body knows best... it sends us signals for a reason.
I can't comment on the diet personally as I don't diet but simply count the food I intake daily and track my workouts.
Hope you both feel better soon!!:flowerforyou:
ETA: Amy-B you're looking fabulous in your photos, I remember when you started... you have done SO well Hon! I can understand the desire to get over a plateau but keep in mind how you lost all that weight originally.. hard work and your workouts! Don't undo the hard work by trying something you might regret later.
Have you tried adding in a different type of workout or more water... you know toss it up a bit to get that body losing the last bit that you're looking too? Could it be your body is not actually plateaued but is ready to weigh what it does now and is simply letting you know that? It's a thought..0 -

I think DH still wants to keep going. I am not sure. He's so indecisive and lacks willpower. I want to get this weight off, and I feel like I might know what I need to do. However, he says that he would feel like a failure (again since he hasn't lost much weight this whole time that I did). Ahhhhh! Maybe we shouldn't have even started it. :frown:0

I have a different take on this... these symptoms aren't necessarily a sign that something is going wrong, it could very well be detox symptoms. Carbs are metabolically necessary, of course, but grains (specifically wheat) can be pretty addictive, not to mention all the other junk they put in even "healthy" processed foods. If you are trying to go from a typical "healthy" diet to a cleaner, whole-foods, non-grain-dependent diet, you will experience detox symptoms that can feel a lot like having a flu and can be treated the same way with rest and extra fluids. Detoxing can last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, depending on how processed your diet was before, how drastic the new diet is, and your personal biology.
Now, I couldn't find specifics on the 17DD online so I don't know if any of that even applies to this program. Just thought I'd offer an alternative opinion.0 -
I tend to agree (I don't know how to copy her post) with jhmomofmany. I am on the 17DD as well and for the first couple of weeks craved cake and chips so badly I thought I would explode. It was akin to quitting smoking...which definately can leave you a bit cranky. I am on day 13 and now don't seem to have those cravings like I did at first.0

Thanks, everyone!
We have decided to do sort of a cycle 3/4 approach. We will have some healthy carbs but not cut them out completely. We will also make sure to get probiotics each day, lean meats, lowfat dairies, lots of water, etc...the things I did anyway to lose my first 100 pounds.0
