I read somewhere on the internet that increasing your caffeine intake in addition to cutting your calorie intake will speed up your metabolism and burn fat off quicker.. has anyone else heard of this ?? Any success or horror stories ?

Caffeine is a stimulant. Its going to give you more energy and drive during your workout. As far as increasing your metabolism. Not in a significant way.
  • that is kinda what I mean.. More directly .. im trying to keep my calorie intake at 1500 for the day .. Monster has a great energy drink called Rehab... Its 20 calories for the 15 oz can...Is drinking one of these a day going to help me burn fat faster than if I didnt?

I always gain if I have caffeine. I learned in a college class, some years ago, that caffeine stimulates fat cells to produce fat. I don't know how accurate it is, but since I always gain, I felt there was definitely something going on.
  • Thats why I posted... Ive heard both sides... Caffeine helps you loose ANNNND caffeine works against you .. something about making you retain water or something like that.. trying to sort it out

Caffeine is a diuretic. It makes you lose water!

Caffeine is a diuretic so it will cause water retention if you don't drink enough water to offset it.

I do a shot of espresso in my protein shake. I drink it prior to and finish post workout. The caffeine definitely helps me through the workout and with the nutrients from the protein shake - I don't bonk toward the end of my workout.

My neurologist told me to cut way back on the caffeine because it is a diuretic and leaves you dehydrated. I did give up my diet cokes but will never give up my coffee! I started drinking water instead of diet cokes. I guess you can try the product a couple of weeks and see if it helps but if you are new to caffeine, you may want to start out slow.
  • ahhhh K.. starting to make sense now... soooo I would get the most "return" if I drank one just before my run on the treadmill and then chased it with water during/after the run

This is what I've read from webmd:

    Booster Shot: Black Coffee
If you're a coffee drinker, you probably enjoy the increased energy and concentration that follows your morning ritual. Taken in moderation, one of coffee's benefits may be a short-term increase in your metabolic rate.

I prefer green tea though to boost my metabolism a little :) take note that it's all short term effect.

That has about 170mg of caffeine in it. Experts consider that 200-300 mg daily is moderate amounts for adults. Also by taking it daily you will develop sensitivity to it. This means that as time goes you will need more caffeine to achieve the same effects. When that happens you simple cycle off and then get back on it.

I've read in the past the caffeine will increase your metabolism. So will spicy food. If you cut your calories too much though you'll lower your metabolism.
