Spin-off: Other people's "fat moments"
Did you ever witness someone else's "fat moment" and have it make a lasting impression on you? Maybe solidify your efforts to stay/get fit?
During the days that I was tipping the scales, I got on a ride at the fair and I watched as it took 2 ride-operators to secure this woman in her seat with the overhead locking contraption. They both had to push with all their might to get the thing to lock. I just thought that was a rough way to have to spend the rest of my life if I kept on the course I was going.
Recently, I was flying back home and the woman next to me was so large that she was unable to put the armrest between us, and took up about 1/3 of my seat too. I felt really bad for her, so I didn't make a fuss. The plane was packed so I knew there was nothing to be done about it at the time, and I had no intention of humiliating her by asking anyway. I could feel her embarrassment as she apologized. :frown:

I went out to eat last night at a restaurant that has tables & booths. The tables were in the middle of the room. I get very uncomfortable being the center of attention. Well, all the tables(like 2 or 3) that had customers had very large people at them because they wouldn't have been able to fit into a booth.
I just think that being big is already going to get you a lot of attention & then to be forced to sit right in the middle of everyone? I probably wouldn't go out to eat at all.0 -
I saw this yesterday. Two heavy girls had to find a seat on the transit bus and they did but i could tell the people they sat next to weren't enjoying the ride and the look on their faces before they sat somewhere was like "don't sit next to me".
I don't want to be as heavy as those girls. I felt so bad for them because they happened to be the only "bigger" people on the bus.
I mean, it's kinda messed up to say "I don't want to look like THAT" but it does have an effect on motivation to keep on the path to losing weight.0 -
I can relate to your experiences. But what really got me to get serious about my weight and fitness is my own image in the mirror. My daughter wanted to take taekwondo classes. I thought that was a great idea, so I signed her up.
About 2 weeks into it I was talking with ine of the instructors, who pointed out his daughter in class. He told that when she started he was sitting there and watching her, and thought"why not do this with her? I'm here anyway". So I thought about that, and realized I had no good excuse why I shouldn't do the same thing. So I started class with my daughter.
Anyway, they have a wall that is all mirror. When I started, I looked like Kung Fu Panda, and it was difficult to get my body to cooperate with the moves. That was my "I don't want to be this way anymore" moment. Since then I have shed 60 lbs. I am much more limber, and I feel great.
I won't be going back to where I was again.0 -
Daves, ultimately it was my own dissatisfaction with myself as well. This thread is the spinoff of that one. My turn-around was also because of something I started doing with my children (walking to school). I figured that if I was walking 2 miles a day and had all this energy, why was I still fat?0
