I'm really glad to have this thread! It's nice to know their are more college students out there going through the same thing!
I guess my biggest issue is figuring out the best exercises to do. Right now I currently do squats, lunges, crunches, aerobic steps, running, push-ups (the girly ones), and I do a dance dvd some. I just don't know what the best things are to do in order to get the best results! I can't afford a gym either, so it's gotta be all stuff I can do at home!0 -
I'll join!0

The videos are both pretty easy to do in a small apartment or dorm without exercise equipment.
I am also doing the 100 Push-Ups challenge, another good anywhere anytime workout.

As my personal workout, I do yoga or pilates. You can find some good free yoga and pilates videos on youtube...and you can find some really terrible ones. But, none the less, it's a great place to look if you don't mind sorting through a few videos.
Thanks for this thread!0 -
Thanks for the heads up on the YouTube videos! I used to have some Pilates videos but I lost them in our move. =( I'll definitely be checking them out!!0

There's a channel on YouTube by diet.com where free exercise and nutrition videos are posted. There are a bunch of good exercise/routine ideas: http://www.youtube.com/user/diethealth
I hope it helps!0 -

Count me in! Although I'm in law school and not college, but I think its tough in any kind of higher education. It helps that most of us have access to a gym for free with our outrageous school tuition. I also LOVE Shape and Self for tips on changing up my routines each month, if you have a subscription its not that expensive at all. Combine that with your free gym and you're on your way!
I think most of us have a hard time with eating healthy, right? I have started making things in bulk on Sunday to last me through the week. For example I make a bunch of chicken breasts and brown rice, eat a portion for dinner that night and throw the rest in tupperware for the week. It helps if you have access to a kitchen, but I can say that the microwave and I are really good friends to. In fact the I lost 20 pounds using primarily a microwave to cook my meals, so it definitely can be done on a limited schedule, limited budget, and limited equipment.0 -

I'm in too! thanks for the apartment room exercises, so often I find myself up at 11pm wanting a break from assignments but it's too dark to walk outside and of course the gym's closed!0
-
i went over by nearly 300. 100+ were avoidable and i won't make that mistake again (soon), but the rest i'm fine with. I could have sworn that midterm essay was due next week, not 8am the next morning... needless to say, i used food as a crutch to replace sleep0

Since finals are here, so is spring break.
For all you wild-ones heading off to the warmer southern hemisphere, here's a lil reminder:For example, 'light beer' may not be as "light" as you may have thought. A chart that lists dozens of brands of beer sold in the U.S. tells the number of calories, number of grams of carbohydrate, and percentage of alcohol in each. According to the chart, 12 oz. of regular Budweiser has 145 calories, but Bud Light has 110. Sierra Nevada Stout is the brand listed with the most calories, at 210 per 12 oz. In contrast, Miller Lite has only 96, and Michelob Ultra only 95 per 12 oz. serving. The beer on the list with the fewest calories is Molson Light at 82 calories per 12 oz.
What about wine, liquor and mixed drinks? The list does not name brands, but does list type. For wines, the chart compares calories for 4 oz. servings. Rose and dry white wines are the lowest in calories, while sherry and port are the highest. For spirits, Southern Comfort is at the high end at 180 calories per 1.5 oz. serving, while tequila, scotch, and 94 proof vodka, rum and whiskey weigh in at 115 calories per 1.5 oz serving.
Add mixers and the story changes: An 8 oz. gin and tonic has 180 calories; an 8 oz. margarita will have 250-350 calories; and a 12 oz. long island iced tea goes for a whopping 789 calories. So, if you're worried about counting calories, stay away from mixed drinks!
In addition to the calorie charts, the web page also includes these handy tips for reducing calorie intake when you're drinking:
* Try alternating alcoholic drinks with low calorie non-alcoholic drinks or water.
* Ask for low calorie / diet mixers where possible.
* Make your wine into a spritzer (a longer drink), or your lager into a shandy - both have fewer calories.
* Substitute your "alcopop" for a shot of spirit and a low calorie mixer - about a quarter of the calories!
* Plan your alcohol into your daily calorie quota so you can enjoy a glass or two. If you know you will be drinking during the weekend, try to save some calories each day in advance, so you can eat normally before you go out.
* Don't be tempted to skip meals to allow for drinks, as alcohol won't satisfy your hunger. In fact, alcohol lowers blood sugar levels (it prevents sugar that is normally stored in the liver, as glycogen, from breaking down). A drop in blood sugar levels sends signals to the brain you are hungry. With alcohol in your system, willpower can go out of the window and the snack attacks kick in. Eating a proper meal before you go out will line your stomach and slow the rate at which alcohol absorbs into your bloodstream, keeping you in control of how much you eat and drink.
Here's the link to the page so you can look over the charts yourself: Caloric Values of Alcoholic Beverages - University of Rochester
And remember, if you drink, don't drive -- or fly!0 -
Aw sad to see Southern Comfort in the high end, I love it mixed with L&P which for non-Kiwis is a lemonish flavoured fizzy drink. Good to see I'm not the only one who gets through college by doing all-nighters!0
-
Glad someone started this group! I'm 21 and finishing up my associates in accounting.
It's so frustrating to be young and in your prime and to not have that typical 20-something year old body.0 -
I have a late, but nice and long spring break starting after tuesday. my goal, as you can see by my ticker, is starting today and ending on April 18, is to have worked out for 1000 minutes. I also want to be down to 149 by then. It's VERY ambitious, but I KNOW I can make the time, if not the weight. It might mean walking around with friends instead of actually going to the gym, but hopefully most of my minutes will be at the gym - it's so much more efficient, and pampering time in the steamroom is so wonderful!
Anyone else take advantage of SB? If so, what did you do/ what were the results? I really need to be inspired here! If I can get in my elliptical time and possibly some weights, it would be so helpful for the crunch time after that. I hate finals/ final projects0
