Hi all, I'm about 10 days new to mfp, in my early-30s. I'm looking to lose ~35 lbs, to score a rough median for BMI. Gained weight when I met hubby, then some more during pregnancy. Lost a bunch while breastfeeding but gained it back after I weaned my son earlier this year.

My hubby is a tall all-you-can-eat-and-never-gain-weight type, who snacks on junk food often. It's so annoying. He's also on his feet most of the day. I'm pretty much the opposite, so this is a tough road. The hardest thing for me is measurements - knowing how much I'm eating, portions-wise and calories-wise, whether we eat out or eat a home-cooked meal. I can eat packaged food sometimes but after a while it gets a little boring. But I need to master this because my daily caloric intake goal is 1250 - under 1200 and I go into starvation mode, over 1250 and I won't lose the 1 lb/week. :/

I'd love to make a few mfp friends!

  • Welcome!

I'm sure you've loved using the site! There's such a large database and the social network aspect of it is great for accountability! I'm new to this thing as well.

I understand the struggles in understanding portions and sizes. The only way to learn is to start measuring it out yourself at home to see what 200 calories of pasta really looks like or 1 serving of granola really is. You'll find some of it surprising. OR I've also read some good books that compare sizes of specific foods to items we all know like the palm of your hand or a ping pong ball, that way it's easier to guess how many calories you're consuming.

Well feel free to add me as a friend - I'm in Virginia too (is that what your subject implied?)

Stick to it, it'll only get easier.

    Hello and Welcome to Virginia!!

I hope you will enjoy using MFP!!! You can add me as a friend if you like.
  • Thanks! I will send friend requests, as soon as I figure out how. =)
And yes, I'm in Virginia. And I guess I missed a comma - it should have read "New, In Va". I'm not new to Virginia, lol.

@kristizzzle, right now I'm using measuring cups and my hubby's estimates for things that won't fit in the cup. hehe. I have a book that describes the palm / golf ball method but I'm visually measurement challenged so this doesn't work too well for me. >.< That's true with distances, lengths, weights, volumes, etc. I was confused on day one just trying to figure out how to calculate calories for oatmeal, since the package gave info for uncooked grams and mfp was asking for cooked cups. My poor hubby was taxing his brain trying to explain it to me.

I have noticed things a little easier though, getting used to the new portion sizes. =D I'm liking MFP so far, and have been logging in every day!

ETA: Figured out the friend reqs. :D
