Question for Other Runners

Okay, runners, I'm currently training for my first 10K and have developed a training plan modeled from one that I got from an actual running coach - just want a second opinion on a few things. I plan on running 3 miles on Tues/Thurs of each week as my shorter runs, as well as doing some cross training/strength training on other days - that's not the part I need help on - it's the long runs! Here's what I've got:

I was supposed to do 4 miles yesterday but did a 5K instead, so I just counted that as part of my training
10/1 - 4.5 miles
10/8 - 5 miles
10/15 - 5.5 miles
10/22 - Pumpkin Run 5 Mile Race (should do 6 miles this day, but will settle for 5)
10/29 - Twilight Thriller 5K/10K - should I do this race as the 5K (which would only be 3.1 miles) or go ahead and do the 10K as a training run? My mileage this day is supposed to be 6.5 anyway, but then THIS would be my first 10K.
11/5 - 4 miles - decreasing mileage because originally my first 10K was going to be on Nov. 12 AND I have a Zumbathon this day, so I didn't want to overdo it
11/12 - Turkey Trot 5K/10K - was planning to do this one as my first official 10K but I'm worried I won't be ready if I don't do the 10K training run on 10/29
11/19 - Legs & Lager 5K/10K - planning on doing this one as a 10K no matter what

I guess my main question is - if this was YOUR training plan, what would you do on 10/29 and 11/12? These are actual races I'm doing so I have to decide the distance I'm doing because that determines my race fee!

I would treat 10/29 as a trial run or long run (10K). You'll be fine if you stick with your program.
  • You will be fine to do either as a 10K! I know for me races are always easier than training due to the support of those cheering and the endless supply of people to try to catch, or to run with for a little bit.

For your first 10k I would focus on finishing rather than a specific time. It's usually when you are going for a personal best that you would run over the race distance for training. In between your long runs what does your training look like? Do you have sprint days or just 2-3 mile jogs at a slower or faster pace?

Also on the day of your zumbathon, you may want to do your run either a day early or a day late.

Congratulations on deciding to do your first 10K, here is to hoping you catch "the runner's bug" :)

I've already caught the runner's bug - I've done 6 5K's already this year. I'm not going for time goals because I KNOW I'm slow - I'm just focusing on distance at this point - and finishing of course. During the week I do spin classes and weight training, so my shorter runs on the weekdays are easier runs. As far as the Zumbathon goes - I don't HAVE to participate because I'm actually coordinating the event as a fundraiser, but if I do participate, I like your idea of doing my 4 miles the day after.
