pre-workout energy?

So I realize the best thing to do is just get enough rest and enough food in general, but I haven't been sleeping well (I think.... anyway I'm tired) and I've got personal training today and I want to have a good workout -- and generally when I'm tired I don't get very good output from my body (makes sense).

Given that I can't go home and take a nap before hand, anyone have any suggestions? some kind of fruit juice? red bull? I don't want to negatively affect my body but I really want to get a good workout today -- I'll try and get more rest tonight.

I just tell myself to suck it up and do it. After 10 minutes I don't even remember being tired. But I'm mean that way:blushing:

a shot of carbs helps me. I eat half a banana, and a handful of cheerios.
  • put on some upbeat music- it will get you wanting to move! oh and make sure you have had plenty of water and protein throughout the day!!

I try to have a mix of carbs and protein before working out. I usually go for something like a handful of almonds and a Kashi granola bar, or an apple and hummus or pb.

Carbs provide you with quick, burst-y energy. (That may not be the exact technical term. ) My doctor has told me that I should try to eat / drink something with carbs in it about 10 minutes before starting a workout, and that should give my body the immediate energy boost to sustain the activity. Then eat / drink something with a lot of protein immediately afterward.

I workout in the morning or at lunch. Some things that I like (not at the same time) are:

    sugar free Red Bull
    Jack3d by Universal Labs
Fuzion K-akg @ Nutri-shop; they also have Fuzion without caffeine in it for those who workout in the evening.
    green tea

    I LOVE pre-workout supplements. I like BSN's NOXplode myself.

I'll eat 1/4 cup of oatmeal and a banana or tbsn of honey. It gives me energy and keep my stomach full until I get to my dinner and or my breakfast (depending if I'm working out in the AM or PM).

I have this problem on occasion so I go for Sugar Free Redbull or even 5 Hour Energy if I'm desperate. (Don't judge me!)

THIS!!! What she said!! If I am tired and almost talking myself out of going, I snap out of it and drag myself in there. Once I start tossing weight around I forget about being tired and always feel better afterwards!!

5 Hour Energy is great too. It's just that Red Bull and 5 Hour can get pricey compared to the pre-workout mixes.

I recently discovered GU Chomps and Gels, I know it's basically just sugar, not the best for you - but it gives me energy to work out without making me feel shaky or jittery. They are about 100 calories each, so I use them sparingly. But there are days when I absolutely dread working out and these give me a little kick. Plus they taste pretty good too.

That is definetely the downside. Most of the time, as long as I have my coffee in the morning I'm good to go.

HA! Thanks for that  It's usually my little secret because I have gotten that lecture before!
  • I take PreSurge Unleashed, MRI Black Powder, and I have used about 6 other PWO powders. The ONE that REALLY kicked me in gear was Primus Lab's Muscle Marinade. I didn't want to leave the gym... I couldn't stop working out.

Yo! Miguel, my brother!..... I am glad you posted this because I was going to ask you what re-WO you used. I have been using Jack3d for a while and like it, but ready to sample something else.

This is so true. Once you are there, you are rarely tired. You get a boost of energy.

thanks guys but this isn't my problem - i have no problem getting TO the workout but my performance is always decreased when i'm tired. Its harder to get my heart rate up, its harder to keep it up, I get tired faster doing strength training (So I can't lift as much as long) etc etc.

Does your gym have a juice bar? The juice bar in my gym mixes PWO drinks and charges $2.00 for them. It gave me the chance to sample each one. They act differently in every body, but here is my review.

1 M.R. - lots of energy, but made me juttery
jack3d - best tasting, but not as effective as others
super pump max & NO shotgun did nothing for me. Could have taken a nap drinking them
white flood and NO explode work terrific for me. these are my go-to PWO drinks.

I would like to try black powder, war and bull nox yet, but my gym doesn't stock them. There is a locally owned vitamin shop that will pass out free samples if you ask, maybe that will work out for you too. I've never been able to get freebies at gnc, vitamin shoppe or hi-health, just the locally owned joint.

Fuzion K-akg fruit punch flavor tops Jack3d for taste, but has a few carbs in it.
