Unemployed and having trouble staying out of the kitchen.

Hi all, I've been unemployed since May and I've been having trouble with my weightloss.

Even when I'm not hungry per-say I find myself snacking constantly out of boredom. Or feeling starved 2 hours after eating a meal (My bf leaves for work at 2 when we eat and around 4 or 5 I find myself ready to eat again).

I find that watching TV or being anywhere near my kitchen (the living room where our television is, is a part of our Kitchen) makes it a lot worse. My boyfriend works from 3pm till midnight and doesn't get home until around 12:30am. We typically go walking 3 miles every night. But even with that work-out I can't help but feel guilty about snacking the entire day.

Any suggestions for someone stuck at home and awake at strange hours of the day?
I'm really trying hard to fight off these cravings. It's so overwhelming.

I have the same problem on the weekends, I just try to stay active as much as possible and away from the kitchen.
  • Same problem. I've just tried to stay busy. The house has never been cleaner! :-) Also I notice when I get out of the house I'll go houses without eating, and not even notice. Best of luck!
  • i know its hard, i've been there. but is there any kind of hobby you are interested in? like i can pass HOURS scrapbooking or reading. anything to pass time. or go for extra walks when you find yourself lingering in the kitchen. maybe a workout dvd to pass time. or just earn extra calories so you dont undo your progress.
  • I've been unemployed since July. Find something to do! No TV (come on now, you don't have a job! lol). Anything that needs to be fixed around the house? Maybe find a park to go read at or just jog around. Heck, I even head up to the local store to just walk around and see what's new. Just get out of the house!

Lost my job 3 years ago when the business closed. I decided to make it "ME" time and work on being the best I could be. I have a stationary bike in front of the tv. Until recently my rule was, I could only watch TV if I was pedaling. I was hospitalized a few weeks ago with a blood clot the entire length of my leg... so no more exercise for a while. I have worked hard so far, and I am not going to waste all the efforts I made to lose 59 pounds, so I am watching my calories more carefully now.

Do something good for yourself today, before it's too late.

I go for a biopsy on Friday. I'm scared, but I am NOT going to stress eat like I normally would.

I almost did better when I wasn't working.... I watched Rachel Rae while fixing my salad and it took 30 minutes just to make it. I try to add as much fiber and water as possible to fill me up and keep me filled up. Also, when no one was home, I was more apt to get out the ZUMBA and exercise. Also, put in a musical/movie and danced to it. Kept me busy for a couple of hours. Good luck. Try to keep in mind the end results as a lifestyle, not just a diet. (I know, easier said than done - you can do it!!!)

Get outta the house. I know it's difficult 'cause you typically spend money you don't have when you're out of the house, but go do something active. Sign up on that volunteer website and get busy doing something. I was going stir-crazy during my unemployed days.

That is where my weight came from too! I definatly agree with the hobby, or maybe try and find somewhere to volunteer?

Depending on where you are, it is probably getting colder out, so this may not be an option but what I found helped was just to go for a long long walk. Just walk for a couple hours. Even if you walk with the boyfriend later, you can't walk too much :p

Or if I had to run errands, if the place was near and I didn't have to carry much, I'd walk or ride a bike instead of drive because it took more time.

I'm pretty sure getting out of the house was the only thing that kept me from doubling what I did gain as I have no self control :p
  • Get up and GET OUT!! Go for a walk, even without your BF. Make up a business that will get you out of the house and ACTIVE - become a house cleaner or a dog walker. It's super easy to start that kind of business and to become bonded and insured is relatively cheap. I also have a great little product that is a weight loss chew. All natural, sweet chew in different flavors (made by Arbonne). Kind of the consistency of taffy, but tastes WAY better. But I honestly think the chewing keeps your mouth busy for a while, which also helps by making those muscles a little tired (my take on it). It helps with my sweet tooth, and has natural herbs that suppress the appetite. I can have one of those and go for hours without a snack.
  • Get out of the house (I am assuming you aren't babysitting) and look for something to do:
--walk and take pictures of whatever you like
    --ride a bicycle
--find a volunteer job (could help you land a job in the future)
--walk your dog or your neighbors dog
    --go running
--walk to the library (might seem inactive but there is no food in the library)
--read a book in a park or beach area.
--go swimming (if you have access to a lake, ocean, or pool)

Just a grocery list of ideas--hope it helped.

My only suggestion is to try and develop a routine. When I was last out of work I made sure I got up, put on 'round the house/garden' clothes so I wouldn't struggle to get out of my pj's in winter, read a magazine or do a crossword while eating breakfast then move on to studying for a course I was doing. Morning tea a couple of hours later then get started on a workout, break for lunch then meet a friend to walk, back home for afternoon coffee before finishing the workout then hitting the shower before organising dinner.

Same here. I'd also suggest using the time you've got to get some serious exercise in. Go for jogs while the SO is out, ride a bike. Also, apply like crazy, everywhere, just keep yourself out of the house.

I eat out of boredom too. What works for me is getting involved in a hobby. I like to draw, paint and garden among many others. I find if I keep myself engaged and active I tend to be less bored and in return eat less. Maybe getting involved with a hobby would work for you. If not, you can always try something time consuming like organizing the closet, cabinets, garage, attic. You can even attempt to rearrange the furniture in your house.

There are plenty of things that you can do that are free too. IE: go to the library and take out a book that looks interesting, sign up for a free class at your local library, go for a hike or bike ride, go to a local nature trail and take pictures, do volunteer work at a local hospital, nursing home, school, church, animal shelter.

Hope I give you some suggestions to help you fill your time. I know how much unemployment sucks.

    Hi!

It's the tv commercials! They make us so hungry. Are you a fruit lover? Of course, it all depends on what you are eating. My suggest would just to be caution on what you are eating and try to fill that time your BF is off working with some type of activity. I've been there... it's like countdown til he gets home!

The evening walks sounds nice but are you getting enough of sleep? Also, before you eat try drinking a glass of water and see how you feel. It not only helps fill your stomach but wash out what you are eating.

Good Luck and hope I helped a little

I've had the same situation, home and awake all night while my boyfriend was at work. I was home alone and awake from 6pm to 6am.

Instead of having meals I just kept lots of little snack type things like mini bags of popcorn, sunflower seeds, and granola bars. I could spend the whole night eating if I wanted to and not kill my calorie goals.

I watched a lot of tv and movies, but I exercised while I was watching them. I did crunches, used weights for some arm exercises, did pilates moves that I memorized from a video I used to have. It also gave me a good chance to try out different exercise videos, since I didn't have to worry about anyone laughing when I messed up or getting in my way.
  • I tend to want to eat when I get bored too. Ever since I lost my job in February the pounds have started piling on. Now when I get bored I'll go do the dishes, clean, do laundry, color, play with my dog, something to keep myself busy. I just do something long enough to get past the hunger. When there is a car at home I'll go out and go to the gym or somewhere I can walk, otherwise I'm stuck at home wanting to eat. I hope you find something that works for you!

Definitely find ways to stay out of the house as much as you can - face to face resume delivery never hurts! I took the opportunity of being unemployed to learn how to cook... which was a fantastic skill and has served me well, but all of that tasting and endulging in the amazing culinary badassery I made helped me put on 30 pounds. I wasn't trying to get fit, it was farthest from my mind - I just wanted to get a job and learn something new (cooking). In retrospect I wish I would have used about half of the time I spent researching recipes and cooking techniques to apply for more jobs and get in an hour of fitness every day.
  • WOW, Thank you all for the supportive replies!!

It's great motivation to know that many of you have all been in the same position.

Luckily I live in Texas, so we still have another month or so of nice weather before the cold starts to settle in. I

'll definitely take the suggestions about trying to leave the house, possibly to drive to a park a little further from the house to encourage me to stay out longer. I find that when I go to the park near my house I don't stay out as long as I'd like.

Thank you all for the great suggestions. I'll be trying them out and seeing if this week I can keep myself out of the kitchen.

This is a great opportunity for self improvement. Just change the way you look at things. Since I've been unemployed I've lost 84 lbs. and passed the CPA exam.

You can go for walks, work in the yard, clean the house like never before, and fix things. It is just wide open. Additionally keeping busy will take your mind off worries and give you a sense of accomplishment.
