so many posts these days start with "I tried the Search button first, but couldn't find the answer I was looking for...." or "I know this is not a such and such site, but this is the chit chat section, so here goes...." or "please don't be mean to me...."

I am ALL for using the search button, but think its sad that so many people feel they have to preface their post with such a statement. Or, if someone has something they want to say (within reason and in compliance of the rules) they should not have to explain why they are posting a rant, vent, random topic, etc. in the chit chat section.

And, the please don't be mean. I cannot say I haven't been snarky or comment a joke, rather than a real answer, but really, do we have to gang up on someone for asking a question? Ok, I get if they ask for opinions/advice, etc., and they are unwilling to take any and/or have an excuse as to why that just won't work or when they are just turds and rude to people, fine, but a sincere question, no matter how "obvious" we seem to think the answer is, should not mean we attack the OP.

Rant over. Feel free to attack....

I agree, I've been on MFP Forums for about a week and found it quite unsupportive of newbie questions and topics. And once one starts everyone gangs up, I reckon it can really hurt a person's journey before they've left the starting blocks
  • Agree totally. Not all of us know fitness information or food information and should be allowed to ask anything. As I tell my students when they start with..."I know this is a dumb question but..." I believe there is never a dumb question and there is probably someone else in this room wondering the same thing as you. So this time you asked, next time someone else will be the one to ask.

It is sad that we have become so politically correct that we have to say sorry for asking a simple question, but we bring it upon ourselves...

    anyone else bored tonight?
  • I agree and I think that's why I rarely post on here. It gets clique at times and the internet bullying (or e-thuggin is what I refer to it as) is ridiculous although it really shows how insecure a person is that they feel they need "cool points" by being rude. Yeah I'm all about sarcasm and bein an *kitten* but a good chunk of people are sensitive and insecure. Sure its easy for some to fake it behind a computer but not everyone is like that.
This place in general is to support or encourage or give positive insight or direction to others. There's plenty of other sights/msg boards to be a **** to people, I mean if that makes one feel better about themself.

This has happened to me a few times and now i have started staying before i post that i searched first etc
even my grammar or lack there of it has been a target and how much space i leave between a sentence and the worst part is these people dont even bother answering or helping out they just come in criticse you for posting and then leave.

It has made me re consider posting or even using this site but ive found theres to many good helpful people to be to worried about the not so helpful

I totally agree! It's like that expression that people use "tact is for those not witty enough for sarcasm."

I hate that so much. I used to respond with "tact is for those secure enough in themselves and their personal attention that they don't need to beg for it by playing contrary to everything they say."

Let people ask a question that you consider dumb. Answer it nicely--THAT is the measure of a person with true security, intelligence, and grace. People forget to use that last one especially....

I will be the first to admit that I have to check myself as I wreck myself for getting smart sometimes. I like teasing my buddies, and pointing out ridiculousness, but I was once new, too. I forget that.

Well, with you guys that's different. I'm totally going to rip you a new one. I keed. But, I'm not opposed to the jokes and snarky stuff and things, because come on, its funny. I mean, its just what us "cool mean kids" do, right? But, the downright rudeness and attacks on the OP is not cool or funny.

its one thing to joke around with those that you have talked to before, but when someone new jumps on here and asks a simple question and people rip into them, and then other people rip into them, and others... its just frustrating, Most of us are here for the same reason, to get into better shape. so why hinder anyone?? welcome them under your wings, then bust their @sses once you get to know them.

I do like to pretend I'm funny enough that an OP can understand that I'm being silly and fun ... because humor diffuses sh!tty situations, and being fat is about the sh!ttiest situation I can think of these days.

They have automatic censorship for certain words. Because even though we're an 18+ site that is supposed to keep conversation PG-13, we still have to maintain G-rated vernacular.

As my mama used to say, " if you can say something nice.........". I try to always remember a lesson I learned from living in a foreign country. Communication is much harder when you can't see facial expressions or hear the tone of voice. I think some misunderstandings occur with computer communication for that reason. The responder may have been making a joke that the reader took the wrong way. I have found everyone here to be wonderfully supportive. I try to make my comments supportive and helpful. Good luck to everyone--we are all in the same boat !
